If I remembered right, the presidential search committe was populated with four Board of Trustees which can be a factor for selection of Jane Fernandes against the wishes of the deaf community. I believe that they should not be entitled to a vote while serving on the search committee but of course they can always participate without a vote in the search process at the committee level -- only can they vote rightfully in their own Board of Trustees meetings as practiced in the past.
The reason for that is not allowing any undue and unfair influence in our search for the most important post of Gallaudet presidency. After all many of the trustees are not Gallauder stakeholders and not getting all letters from the Gallaudet office addressed to them, thus being subject to the undue influence of the current President Jordan who has weeded many letters out and kept the trustees misinformed.
So we need to modify the old president selection rules to disallow a vote by any Trustee at the level of the president search committee throughout the process.

Dean, good point! I didn't think about the search committee makeup last night when I was writing this post. I agree-- I think there needs to be stronger alumni representation, both on the Board itself and in its various committees. Something for me to discuss in my next post, perhaps.
Larry, I haven't checked the news yet-- so that is an interesting possible development. Davila might be a good interim president; what do you think?

Yes, Robert Davilia would be good interim President....
How about NAD President Bobbie Scoggins be a next President of Gallaudet U?

Great assessment of what Gallaudet should do next! I am leaning toward option #3. I strongly believe that Gallaudet faculty, staff, and students need to sit down and fight the oppression, racism, audism problem. While doing that, it will give Gallaudet some time to heal from the deep wounds. Thus, an interim president is an ideal for this situation just to run the ship. Then presidential search will begin and it will be probably 6 months to 1 year doing that anyway.
Whatever, we need to keep eye of Gallaudet's plans!
Unity for Gallaudet!

Deafman, I'd prefer to see Bobbie Beth Scoggins stay where she is- I think she could be very good for NAD. The fact that Davila's name even entered the article at all intrigues me-- I wonder if the Board has already quietly made discreet overtures to see if Davila's interested?
Joey, thanks for the compliment! While I too think an interim president is the best option, I'm wondering which is better: an interim president to serve until a permanent choice is determined, or a "caretaker" president who agrees to serve a limited term (say, 3-5 years), while larger, broader concerns and issues are hashed out?
I'm not sure which would be best. What do you think?

I see Jane as the “Abe Lincoln” martyr. She worked to liberate the deaf communities from the grips of dependence only to be shot down by the dependency confederates.

Of course, the removal of Jane Kelleher Fernandes from the position is only a first step toward reforming Gallaudet University. The Agents of Colonization and their Byzantine power structure must be uprooted next. Otherwise they will grow back on our heads blocking any further progress.
The Board respectfully asked the students to continue with 'cleaning up'. So why not do that?! The Board declared that the best interest of the school was the removal of the designate. Therefore whoever worked for the designate, often with undignified methods, worked against Gallaudet interest! Therefore, consequences are expected to take place.
We have every reason to celebrate, but we need to keep in mind: the empowerment of the Deaf community at Gallaudet is not yet complete until reforms -- based on self-determination and cultural autonomy -- are not worked out and are not implemented. Only the success of reforms can crown our efforts with a sense of genuine achievement.

Another excellent article by you. Could always count on you for calm and even-headed analyses! Well, for me- after JKF's ouster, the sooner IKJ is outta here, the better! He has NO confidence from faculty, and students *HAVE* declared their non-recognition of IKJ as Prez. So, I'm for Option #2 as well. Michael Moore sure impressed our socks off, and when I presented on Deafhood with Genie & Ella there a couple of weeks ago, he certainly looked.. presidential.

DE, thanks for the compliments.
I agree- I don't think IKJ staying past Dec 31 is a good idea. As you pointed out, the faculty voted "no-confidence" in him; that's a pretty powerful message.
I don't remember Moore very well from my Gally days, but it seems like he's doing a very good balancing act as interim provost. Do you really think he'd be a good interim president? One advantage in his favor is he knows the campus well, as opposed to bringing in an outsider (or relative outsider, anyway).
I guess we'll all find out fairly soon...

kudos to your posting. well-thought out, esp having an advisor to work with presidential search consultants and better yet the consultant should stay, eat, sleep on campus for 30 days (I'd settle for two weeks) to develop a better feel and insight. Think you can share this with the BoT? If it were up to me, I would.

Thanks, Lonamstven! Yeah, I agree- if a consultant is helping out, they should live and breathe Gallaudet-- it would make their knowledge of what makes Gallaudet tick far more comprehensive.
As for the BoT... hm. I could, but it might be better coming from someone more influential and connected than I, saying, "Hey, look at what this guy's saying. You might want to think about this..." Still, might not hurt to dash off a letter to the Board. I am an alumni, after all.
