I am also considered One Of Those That Cannot Drink. I still drink. They say to take it one day at a time. "They" are full of shit. You still have to wrap your brain around the idea that you will NEVER drink again. I can't accept that.

I feel like I've experienced or am experiencing a similar situation, but with different bad habits.
You're right, I think these habits aren't the source, but the byproduct of some depression. It's a way of distracting yourself temporarily from the gloom enough to take a breath of air.
But you are a very good and clear writer, & that's a real gift.

I have read and looked up your flicker page for two years now. You have a singular voice filled with sadness, wit and longing. Have you ever considered entering an MFA program? Let me know, I teach in one that will allow you up to three and maybe four years to just work on your stories. Maybe it's the break you need? Listen, I make no promises other than that I will read your application myself. But whatever you decide, you will land on your feet because you are a cat slumming as a butterfly.

makes sense to me. it's not an outward thing. a chemical make-up in part perhaps. situational. where to go from there.
