Gravatar Wow! Pope Benedict, you like Seinfeld? So do I. That is so cool!

Gravatar William,

I enjoy a good laugh just like the next guy. Seinfeld's comedic effect works despite the depravity of the characters. In fact, it is because their depravity never pays off, and is readily identified for what it is, that someone with a fully informed conscience may enjoy viewing the program without harm.

However, we must be vigilant that we do not allow ourselves to embrace the errors of the world, as does a certain cardinal who shall remain nameless (in spite of his extremely ugly Southern California cathedral).

Gravatar Pope Benedict,

I liked Seinfeld a lot, too. In fact, I felt a huge void in my life once the program ended. What are your thoughts on the final episode: thumbs up or down?

God bless, Maureen Martin

Gravatar Maureen,

Please, there is no need to be so formal. I am off duty, so you can just call me Papa if you like.

I found the final episode to be both funny and appropriate. Our actions have corporal and eternal consequences. One day we will find ourselves in a similar situation, except we will be standing before the Supreme Judge while the infernal enemy accuses us. We too will have to account for everything. Let us trust in the Divine Mercy!

More importantly I am concerned about you, dear child. It is not good that the cancellation of a TV program left a void in your life. Perhaps you should go to Confession, Mass and Benediction this weekend to fill that void with what matters.

God bless you.

Gravatar Dear Holy Father,

I liked the last episode of Seinfeld too. But I'm worried, because I think that there was a strong influence of Jean-Paul Sartre in it (we studied Huis Clos when I took French in highschool) and since Sartre was a notorious sinner and an atheist, I'm afraid that enjoying the last episode of Seinfeld was sinful. Can you recommend a good and suitable penance?

Gravatar Wanda,

What an astute observation. I suppose every episode of Seinfeld has a bit of a Huis Clos flavor. However, one must not confuse the context in which something is presented. When all is said and done, the humorous component was the absurdity of it all. We laugh because we reject existentialism!

As far as any voluntary penance goes, I would recommend that you say 5 Hail Marys, not for laughing during the final episode, but for your mild case of scruples.

God bless you, child.

Papa

Gravatar Forgive me, I never even watched (1)segment of Senfield, did I really miss something?

Gravatar ssoldie,

You missed some good laughs (if you have a twisted sense of humor).

God bless you.
Papa
