Good commentary, Rusty. I'm a Christian and a conservative, and a retired Air Force officer, so Fred was a natural candidate for me to support. Several weeks ago I realized Fred could not win, and I started reading about other candidates. Mitt Romney stood out amongst the remaining field as the most likely choice to nominate conservative judges, support free economic principles, do something positive about our immigration fiasco, serve with dignity in office, and, yes, effectively act against Islamic jihadists and not capitulate to these barbarians from the seventh century.
Rudy is also acceptable, but Mitt has more resources, a better organization, a record of success in business AND government, and has shown he can win a long campaign (at least so far).
I, too, urge my fellow conservatives to take another look at Mitt Romney. This election is too important to throw away to a ghastly woman like Clinton or a liberal neophyte like Obama.

Ron Paul a crackpot bigot? I'm not sure how a crackpot gets a degree from Duke University in Medicine, and I'm not sure how a bigot wins 10 terms to congress as a Republican in a Democratic district.
To further refute your argument, Ron Paul throughout the years has publicly stated that his heroes include Gandhi and MLK for their ideas of non-violent social protest and Ludwig von Mises and Murray Rothbard (both Jewish) for their libertarian economic views. Most bigots don't have Jews, blacks, and Indians as their primary inspirations.
Your "crackpot bigot" remark is almost exactly the same comment that the talking heads at FOX news use to slander him.

And I don't appreciate being called a 'bigot' for my refusal to vote for a Mormon. Nice try using a liberal tactic on me.
And why don't you do some research on Mormonism before you start dismissing any concerns about it and accusing people of bigotry. Try looking at the parts where they believe that someone had sex with Mary to conceive Jesus or the part where they believe in a plurality of Gods.

Ron Paul is the most philosophically related to Fred Thompson. Both candidates are for limited government, strict interpretation of the Constitution, fiscal conservatism, and the list goes on and on.

I'm an evangelical suburban housewife who has never missed a vote. I came close to sitting the Dole fiasco out, but in the end, pulled the lever. My husband didn't.
My problem with Mitt is that everytime I see the guy, I like him less. The Michigan pander was the last straw. He seems like a one term governor of a liberal state who will morph into any shape to get a vote.
Right now I'm going to fold on the presidency. I will write in Fred in the primary for the heck of it, and decide what to do in the general when it comes.
I just can't see it when Mitt's supporters try and sell him as a conservative. He's a moderate, another Dole.

Linda,
What makes Mitt moderate? Serious question, not rhetorical.
As far as I can tell he's
a) pro-life
b) pro-massive tax cuts
c) pro-killing the jihadis
d) pro-gutting federal government. Not Ron Paul gutting of federal government, but certainly as much as Rudy and McCain.
But I might be missing something. Really.

Romney is a pandering liar. He is saying the "right" things to get elected. The point isn't that he has changed his mind on every major issue... it's that his change in position just happened to coincide with whatever was best for him to win the election.
Who knows what he would do if he actually got elected. Plus his record on the economy in Massachusetts was substantially belows average. Fortunately he has no chance at all in the general election.

McCain is a disaster and I agree with Rush and Hannity on this one.
The media labels McCain a maverick because he stabs conservatives in the back.
The media doesn't label Zell Miller a maverick but a traitor to the democratic party.
The media loves McCain and that's a HUGE red flag to any conservative.

It is interesting (to me at least) that when Mr. Huckabee talked about high gas prices in Iowa he was praised as being in touch with the issues facing the average Iowa citizen. Yet when Mr. Romney discussed a plan for investing in technology to transform the auto industry, save jobs and increase energy independence, he is chastised as a 'pandering liar'. Seems both were connecting with the electorate to me.

Those who ask "What will Mitt really do if elected?" have to consider that they know EXACTLY what McCain will do, and that's push the Amnesty through. Yes, Mitt likes to "change his mind" a lot. Yet he's lived a good life, is a good family man, a very successful business man. Whose instincts do you trust more, McInsane's or Mitt's?
Don't forget, that one of the few men who was a hero in the fight against Amnesty Senator DeMint has endorsed Mitt. Don't forget that Tancredo, the symbol of the fight against Amnesty endorsed Mitt as well. So weigh the odds carefully and decide under whose leadership the Amnesty is less likely to be passed and vote for that guy.

I know Mitt Romney personally. My inlaws have known Mitt for 41 years since he and Ann first came to Massachusetts to attend Harvard. My wife used to be his housekeeper and used to get the hand-me-down dresses from Ann.
I have heard many stories about the integrity of character with which Mitt Romney acts. I know first hand about his patience with people, his optimism for the future. I also know Mitt Romney to be very innovative when it comes to solving problems.
I have no hesitation in recommending Governor Romney for president. I believe in and trust him fully. I also know that he is the most likely candidate to get America out of a recession then any other candidate on either side of the isle. Making over $100 million in networth should say something for his ability to predict markets and take advantage of resources.

Why does everyone say McCain can beat Hillary?
1. Because he's more physically attractive than Hillary, regardless of one's sexual orientation.
2. Because he doesn't have the last name "Clinton", and all the baggage that goes with it, i.e. Slick Willy.
3. Because he's already practically a Democrat, so conservatives think undecided voters will find a RINO more attractive than a dyed-in-the-wool Republican.
4. Because he will not have a co-President, i.e. Slick Willy.
5. Because they don't like Mitt's hair and uber-polished demeanor.
6. Because Ron Paul is Ron Paul.
7. Because Huck scares the living crap out of anyone who is not Christian.
8. Because they think Obama will take the Dem nomination, so who gives a shit if he can beat Hillary?

Here is Romney's actual conservative record:
---In the four balanced budgets he signed into law, Governor Romney used the line-item veto or program reduction power to cut spending by nearly $1 Billion. Over the course of four budgets, Governor Romney made over 300 line-item reductions, 350 line-item eliminations and struck language 150 times.
--- When Gov Romney took office in Massachusetts, he inherited a $2 billion deficit. While in office, he turned the $2 billion into a surplus----WITHOUT raising taxes.
---Gov Romney solved the health care crisis in Massachusetts----and his plans are still used today. He did this by using the free market and competition---and without raising taxes.
--- Gov. Romney was instrumental in passing a bill abolishing a retroactive capital gains tax in the state that would have forced nearly 50,000 taxpayers to pay an additional $200 million in state taxes and fees
--- 4 years ago --- before the illegals marched in our streets --- Romney opposed a bill that would have allowed illegal aliens to get driver’s licenses. "Those who are here illegally should not receive tacit support from our government that gives an indication of legitimacy," the governor said. (Scott S. Greenberger, "Romney Stand Dims Chances Of License For Undocumented," The Boston Globe, 10/28/03)
--- Romney vetoed a bill in 2004 that would have permitted illegal aliens to pay the same in-state tuition rate paid by citizens at public colleges and universities in Massachusetts.
--- Romney vetoed the bill providing state funding for human embryonic stem cell research
--- Romney vetoed a bill that provided for the "morning after pill" without a prescription because it is an abortifacient and would have been available to minors without parental notification and consent
--- He vetoed legislation which would have redefined Massachusetts longstanding definition of the beginning of human life from fertilization to implantation

Romney's conservative Record (cont'd)
--- Governor Romney strongly supported a successful ballot initiative that replaced the state's bilingual program with English immersion. (Romney Vows to Protect English Immersion Law, May 1, 2003)
--- Governor Romney demonstrated his commitment to school-choice by vetoing a bill that would have canceled funding for Massachusetts' charter-school program. (Romney to Veto Charter School Moratorium, June 23, 2004)
--- He supported parental notification laws and opposed efforts to weaken parental involvement
--- He fought to promote abstinence education in public school classrooms with a program offered by faith-based Boston group Healthy Futures to middle school students.
Governor Romney filed and signed into law the most significant expansion of military benefits in recent years. The new law reduced to zero the cost members of the Massachusetts National Guard must pay to attend public colleges and universities, increased twenty-fold the death benefit paid to families of members killed in the line of duty, created a new annuity benefit for Gold Star spouses and boosted the amount paid to Gold Star parents. (Romney Signs Legislation Expanding Military Benefits, November 11, 2005)

The anti-Romney propaganda is easily dissected once you know the truth. “Fact”: In 2005 Mitt Romney said the McCain immigration bill was “reasonable,” but opposed it in 2007. Truth: Romney explicitly refused to endorse the 2005 bill. His position hardly changed; the bill itself changed. “Fact”: As Governor, Romney refused to comment on Bush’s tax cuts. Truth: When asked, Romney was trying to pass a state budget through a liberal legislature and wisely stayed out of national politics. “Fact”: taxes went up under Romney. Truth: cities raised taxes, Romney cut them. “Fact”: Fees are like taxes. Truth: a fee covers costs for a special good or service (similar to paying a local business); Romney saved tax dollars by reducing the taxpayer subsidy of fees. “Fact”: Under Romney there were sanctuary cities. Truth: sanctuary status was instituted on a city level, outside Romney's purview. “Fact”: Romney changed on gay rights. Truth: the words "gay rights" had different meaning in 1994 than they do today. Romney has consistently stood and fought against gay marriage. “Fact”: Romney didn't execute any criminals. Truth: there is no death penalty in Massachusetts but Romney fought for it. “Fact”: Romney said he didn’t line up with the NRA then became a member. Truth: Romney has always agreed with most NRA positions but never lined up on everything. “Fact”: Romney said his father marched with Martin Luther King, Jr. Truth: George Romney participated in Dr. King's marches, led a march of 10,000 and was praised by MLK, Jr. who spoke positively about the prospect of George Romney running for president.
Then there is abortion. They claim Romney provided 50 dollar abortion co-pays in his health-care bill. Truth: the abortion co-pay was court-mandated and was not part of the bill.

He has been endorsed/supported by both Tom Tancredo and Sherrif Joe---as well as MANY others!!!
EVERY other candidate Huckabee, Guliani, McCain, Hillary, Obama----is going to try to force amnesty down our throats as soon as they get into office!!!
Therefore, they will want to give 20+ million illegals amnesty---plus millions more of their famiy members through chain migration!!
What will be left for you and your family??? What type of future will your children and grandchildren have!!!
This might end up being our last chance to put a stop to the madness of the illegal invasion---and Mexico's interference in our laws/country.

No wonder Hewitt sent his Fredhead listeners here!
I'm a conservative Christian who was thinking about Huckabee as my second choice in case Fred's campaign imploded but when he ran as a Christian leader (I don't trust a politician who uses Christ to get elected) and found out about his tax increases and his immigration policy, I dropped him but didn't like any of the other guys either.
I was thinking of writing Thompson's name in but decided to vote for Romney since they're all flip-floppers, they're all to the left of Fred but Romney at least is saying the right things now. And he understands the war and the importance of tax cuts to stimulate the economy.

Some of you anti Mitt people are missing the point on what he accomplished in liberal Massachusettes. There is only so much a conservative can do in a state that consistently elects people like Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Barney Frank, etc... Not to mention a liberal state legislature and judicial system. I think it speaks to Romney's character that he was so successful as Governor and was able to get so much done. I can't think of anybody better (besides Thompson, who is out, unfortunately) to take on Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid than Mitt Romney.

Stablehand. I think the post you cite suggested you DO SOME RESEARCH. There are many, amny sites with info on Mormonism. Esp. google "ex-mormon". Read Th Book of Mormon etc and tell me that is Christian!
E.g.:
MORMONISM IS ANTI-CHRIST:
"One of the most fallacious doctrines originated by Satan and propounded by man is that man is saved alone by the grace of God; that belief in Jesus Christ alone is all that is needed for salvation." (Miracle of Forgiveness, Spencer W. Kimball, p. 206.)
There is no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith as a prophet of God, (Doctrines of Salvation, Vol. 1, p. 188.)
"Many men say there is one God; the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost are only one God. I say that is a strange God [anyhow] - three in one and one in three. . .It is curious organization… All are crammed into one God according to sectarianism (Christian faith). It would make the biggest God in all the world. He would be a wonderfully big God - he would be a giant or a monster." (Joseph Smith, Teachings, 372).

Fred is saying that he would be interested in the VP position. I think that Romney/Thompson would be an EXCELLENT ticket----and one that could beat the Dems.
McCain has NO chance---he is only being pushed by the liberal media and Dems---because he would be EASY for them to beat.
Think about it.......THOUSANDS of people have turned to Independent voter status due to the war and the illegal issues. McCain is running a pro-war and pro-illegal campaign. He has NO chance of winning.
Guliani is HATED by the NY Fireman and fireman/emergency responders throughout the country and their families---as they blame him for the deaths of the firemen in Tower 2---and other reasons as well. They have a national campaign to bring him down.
Huckabee is considered a joke---and ANY Dem would beat him easily!!!
Romney is our BEST chance!!!

So this is supposed to be the Republican's best chance???
Bishop Romney:
1994: “I believe that abortion should be safe and legal.”
1994: “I do not take the position of a pro-life candidate.”
2002: “When asked will I preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose, I make an unequivocal answer: yes.”
2002: Endorsed legalization of RU-486, the abortion-inducing drug.
2006: “I am firmly pro-life”
2007: “I never called myself pro-choice. I never allowed myself to use the word ‘pro-choice,’ because I didn’t feel I was pro-choice. I would protect the law, I said, as it was, but I wasn’t pro-choice.”
2007: “When I ran for office, I said I’d protect the law as it was, which is effectively a pro-choice position.”
2007: “Senator Kennedy he said that I was ‘multiple choice’ for which he got a good laugh because I would not say I was pro-choice.”
2007: “Look, I was pro-choice. I am pro-life.”
2007: [Would you expand federal funding of embryonic stem cell research?] “I certainly will.”
2007: “People who are elected to public office continue to disappoint, and they somehow think that if they vote the right way on issues of significance or they can speak a good game, that we’ll just forgive and forget.”
Paul Curtis: “You wonder if he has any moral center at all, because he’s running a campaign that verges on the sociopathic.”
Sam Brownback: “Mitt told the National Abortion Rights Action League that, “You need someone like me in Washington.”"
Joseph Farah: “He was true to his word, even though now he says he was lying. … Which Romney do you believe? Which one do you like? As for me, I don’t like either one of them.”

You're wrong on one count, Rusty. McCain cannot beat Hillary or any Democrat. The MSM's love affair with him will turn on a dime once he had the nomination. Add that to the fact that so many of us will not vote for him due to McCain-Feingold, tax-cuts, et al and it will be a walk for the Democrats.

One huge problem in the US now are the numbers of asshats that say "The democrats and the republicans are all the same".
If we put forward McCain then we are deciding that we want the two to be the same. We will be rooting for more of the liberal side of Bush, with amnesty, and tax "rebates" for losers who don't even pay taxes, and fewer overall tax breaks. The Dems will shift over into the Marx camp, and will still call McCain's GOP the "right wing extremists".

Great idea. Google "ex mormon" to find out all about what mormons believe. I am sure there is NO animosity there. That's about as smart as claiming to have more than enough experience to become President because your husband did it for 8 years. Crazy idea, try www.lds.org (the official website for the church) or ask a mormon directly, instead of spouting out anti-mormon speak. You obviously know NOTHING about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and this is NOT the forum for this type of dialogue. Heres the bottom line. Stop with the Anti-Mormon Crap. You anti-mormon types need to give it a rest ... we are voting for the Commander-in-Chief, not the Minister-in-Chief. Romney is a mormon, so what, get over it. He is by far the best option to straighten out the economy, stop illegal immigration, etc... I am voting for Mitt.

Those of you who are posting BS about Romney and his religion are just idiots!!!
First, we are electing a president, NOT a preacher.
Second, Romney's father was elected Gov of Michigan 3x---so his religion obviously caused NO problems there. Romney just won Michigan 10 points over McCain---so obviously Michigan's citizens were not concerned about Romney's religion.
NOT ONE article, complaint, etc.----has ever come out of Massachusetts about Romney being a problem because of his religion.
Romney captured a larger percentage of the evangelical votes in both Michigan and Nevada----obviously these people realized that they were electing a president, NOT a preacher.
Finally, grow UP!!

"Let's make sure we get this clear:
I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY.
And I don't appreciate being called a 'bigot' for my refusal to vote for a Mormon. Nice try using a liberal tactic on me.
And why don't you do some research on Mormonism before you start dismissing any concerns about it and accusing people of bigotry. Try looking at the parts where they believe that someone had sex with Mary to conceive Jesus or the part where they believe in a plurality of Gods."
Not voting for someone because of religious beliefs. Sure, we believe you, you aren't bigoted at all.
/end sarc
Really, are mormon beliefs any crazier than the christian beliefs that a guy chilled out inside a whale and that the earth is 6,000 years old? AND that a guy stuffed over 1 million species onto a single boat? Really, Christians need to step back and think a bit before criticizing others religious beliefs.
I'm starting to be drawn to Mitt. I think I am still with McCain as he has been right the whole time about Iraq and has a strong shot in the general election. You can easily learn about the LDS church by asking members...and I have. They believe that the President of the LDS church can forgive sins. They teach Mormon history and about Jospeh Smith in Sunday School instead of Jesus Christ resurrected.
I have learned alot about the LDS church from LDS members!
But I have learned alot more from those who left the church and were brave enough to tell about the beliefs.
Mitt Romney does not believe in the God of the Bible and the Jesus of the Bible. He believes in a false christ and a false gospel.
We are not to be bound together with unbelievers (2 Cor 6:14) nor are we to listen to those who bring us another gospel:
Galatians 1:6-10:
"I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel;
7which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
8But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!
9As we have said before, so I say again now,if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!
10For am I now seeking the favor of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ."
As a Christian, I cannot support nor vote for Mitt Romney nor any person who is following a false god.
Sorry.
Sigh, I miss Fred.

Ah, what might have been. I've thought Romney would be good, but I also admired Fred's ability to cut through the bull and state things clearly and succinctly.
He never seemed to really want the job very badly, and I don't blame him. It's like a twist the Groucho Marx joke that he wouldn't want to belong to a club that would accept him as a member. Would you want to be president knowing what you have to turn into to win it?
As for Romney's religion, I've been LDS all my life and I've yet to engage in any human sacrifice, auto de fey, or cannibalism. Mormonism does seem strange to those who look at it with a skeptical eye, but I don't think that Catholics spend a lot of time worrying about where transubstantiation makes them cannibals. What matters is what kind of character Romney has, not what the theological intricacies of his church are. Besides, Mormons believe in separation of church and state as a fundamental doctrine. Not many religions can say that.

Rusty, thanks for accurately portraying the difference between Christians who supported Thompson vs. those supporting Huckabee.
Kafir, you are in rare form today. Thanks for adding some levity to what's been a depressing day.
For all of those who can't get past Romney being a Mormon - it's a race for President and not High Priest! I don't think Romney's religion was an issue when he was governor and don't expect it to be in the future. Bren said it well.
Regarding McCain - he has a real mean streak and often lashes out at conservatives. Reminds me of Sen. Specter (wish they'd both retire).
Rush noted recently - Democrats wish Huckabee would become the Repub nominee because he's so beatable AND because they think Republicans would force evangelicals out of the party over it, effectively diminishing Republican party strength for years to come. It actually makes some sense - and Huckabee supporters should find it embarrassing that Democrats WANT to run against him.
Regarding Hillary - be afraid, be very, very afraid. She will overhaul healthcare on day one and it will be downhill from there. Think Supreme Court. Think big government nanny-state. If you don't like waiting in line at the DMV, you won't like anythinkg about a Hillary administration.
I'll support Romney.

Bren's comment above is a model of spin.
On taxes, Romney didn't go from $2 billion in the red to $2 billion in the black by waving his magic wand. Instead, he raised fees in the state by half a billion dollars in his first year alone, and simply pretended it didn't count as a tax increase. Fees increased on everything from gun permits to boat licenses.
Oh, and let's talk about Mitt and guns. To his credit, he worked with GOAL (the Massachusetts Gun Owner's Action League) to reform a couple of technical asininities in the Commonwealth's most-stupid-and-onerous-in-the-nation gun laws. Beyond that, though, he was indistinguishable on guns from the odious John Rosenthal, and to this day supports a ban on scary black rifles (otherwise known as "assault weapons").
Mitt can eat the peanuts out of my stool.

Hopefully there will be no more posts from Reality Bites. Such venom and intolerence has no place in the God loving conservative marketplace of ideas. What church one goes to makes no difference, we all know Sunday Christians who go to just the right church but otherwise live a very non-christian life. I would suggest we get the best insights of people is to observe what they do, not what they say or what church they go to. How do they treat their families, friends, people that work with and for them, people they do not know. What do they do with their lives?

Rusty, VERY GOOD ENTRY! I'm with you, too!
I think if someone is going to vote against someone because of their TRULY PEACEFUL religion, then perhaps they are a bigot. John Ashcroft is a Mormon and he didn't start WWIII against abortion advocates. Mormons aren't out cutting off heads and trying to enslave the world, ya know.
Personally, I want Rudy Giuliani. I'll happily vote for Mitt, I'd poke my eyes out to vote Huckabee, but I think I'd sit out the friggin election before voting for McCain. He's pissed me off one too many times and has been essential in stalling President Bush's agendas in the Senate. Jackleg of the 10th order, I spit on thee.

Former Fredhead, now supporting Mitt 100%. The most important issue in this election is immigration. Like someone else said above, nothing else is going to work unless we stop all the freebies and seal up the border. Donated to Fred, worked the Internet for Fred, had Fred bumper stickers before he announced! Sad to see Fred go.
We have 2 votes in Florida and are trying to choose between Rudy & Romney.
McCain, Huckabee, & Paul are unelectable - I don't care what any poll or pundit says - they are not ... nor should they be.
NY Times just published a vicious hit piece on Rudy loaded with unnamed sources. Real Clintonesque politics of personal destruction.
Rudy has a huge GOTV org here in FL but may be old news whereas Romney is the new kid in town and we know how fickle Fl can be.
I am a Southern Baptist Pastor and lifelong Republican and sure I am not happy with Mormonism but Romney is somewhat conservative and is electable.
Two questions for Romney: What business or organization did he turn around without huge Mormon assistance? Name likely appointments and nominations.
For Rudy: Is he done tomcatting around? Sure don't need another Kennedy or Clinton in these dangerous times. Name likely appointments and nominations.
Either one willing to commit to Fred for the Supreme Court or US Attorney General or VP or ??

I am also Catholic and will strongly consider voting for Romney. As others have pointed out, he is moving in the right direction on the issue of abortion, has demonstrated personal success financially, has the right mindset for the war on terror and comes across in a dignified manner, which I think is quite important as one of those intangibles that can win an election. I just had to respond to this from above concerning exceptions to abortion:
(mothers life is in danger, incest and or rape.)
The cases are so rare for a mother's life to be in danger if she delivers or has a C-section. It is so hard to place oneself in the shoes of another but I can't get this thought out of my mind: I don't know of one mother who wouldn't take a bullet for her child. Why can't that apply when the child is in the womb? I have faith that medical advances will eliminate the medical issue, if that is the only available option.
Incest/rape are also such tough issues. I just say this: If you saw two ultrasounds: one of a child conceived in love and one conceived in violence and/or incestually, would you be able to distinguish them?

Guliani also does not have a chance. Currently, the NY Firemen and their families---as well as the Firmen/Emergency Responders throughout the country---have a campaign to bring Guliani down!!! They blame him for the deaths of the firemen in Tower 2. They protested him being able to speak at the 9/11 ceremony!!
It seems that years before (the first time the terrorists tried getting the Trade Center)--they told Guliani that they needed new radios. Guliani never got them for the Firemen. Therefore, when the Firemen were in Tower 2 on 9/11---they did not get the order that came through the radios telling them to evacuate NOW!!! All of the police who were in that tower made it out alive---because they got the evacuation orders---but the NY Firemen did not!!!
They have other issues as well---which they are releasing nationally through websites, youtube, books etc.---so that America will see what the "real" Rudy is about.
I think that the reason this has not hit the media more, is because they have not really been pushing it recently due to his low poll numbers.

1. I am a Rudy supporter, because I lived in New York for 10 years and have seen what he did, but you don't care, so I won't belabor the point.
2. I never thought Fred could bear the weight of the fantasies that many conservatives brought to his candidacy. I think Fred realized it too, and that is why he quit.
3. I will not balk at supporting Mitt if it comes to that. He seems to me a pretty conservative guy on a gut level (not theoretical) and all of the Dems are disasters in waiting. The next President will probably get 2 SCOTUS nominations in his first term.
4. I will vote for McCain if it comes to that. Islamo-fascism is issue no 1, and 2 and 3 and 4. John McCain or a Defeatocrat? Not a real choice.
5. Between Mitt and McCain, I have to back Mitt. McCain has a couple of strikes against him (not including CFR, his torture tic, Global Warming and a few other issues)
First, as a candidate he is hot and small. He can beat Hillary, but Obama would clobber Mac if Obama were white, and can beat Mac even though Obama is not, because he is cool and long. But Mitt is cool and long and he looks and sounds like a president, so he can defeat Hillary and Obama.
Second is Mac's age and health. He is 72 and a cancer survivor. Mitt is 60 and is healthy. Mac will look bad compared to Obama, old and damaged, and not much better than Hillary.

6. Hucklberry is the Hurricane Hazel of this campaign. A minor league player who came up and tore up the bigs for a couple of months, but who will be solved by big league pitchers and sent back never to be seen again.
I don't think he is very conservative and he seems to have nanny state instincts. I do not think he can win a general election. Fortunately, I think he reached his apogee and will now return to earth.
7. I don't know why people think that Hillary is a shoo-in in November. I think that by then, the nation will be sick of her. Further, if the Dem Primary gets any more contentious there is chance that the winner may have alienated a large swath of the party faithful. Hillary, in particular is running the risk of completely frying the black vote that is so crucial to Democrat chances. Further, I do not believe that the country will elect a black man as president, particularly one who is running as a liberal democrat. Study, if you will, the 2006 elections for Governor in Ohio and Pennsylvania and Senator in Maryland.
8. Get over your Mormon things. I am not a Mormon, heck, I am not a Christian, but I have known more than my share of Mormons, at least one intimately. I do not know much about Mormon theology, and nothing of their rituals, but I do know about their characters and families. Both are first rate. Kind of 1957 small town mid-west America. Really straight, but plain spoken and decent. Mitt and his family strike me as absolutely average Mormons in that respect.
Their religion may not be "normal" but the families and people it creates are better than average. By that token they must be doing something right. I doubt that Mormonism would be a real issue in a general election, and I do not think it should influence your choice of Republican candidates.

I liked Fred alot but I cannot help but wonder if he was in to test waters for a future run or if he was a front for McCain. If you noticed almost all of Fred's concerns were directed at Huckabee. I know Fred considered McCain a friend but on domestic policy they are polar opposites. I think that hurt Fred because he was gaining momentum and he hurt Huckabee in South Carolina but left McCain alone. That bothered me greatly about Fred. He should have pointed out the many differences he had with McCain on taxes, immigration, free speech, values and the courts. Also on those stupid CAFE standards McCain is pushing in his environmental agenda. Come On Fred you should have been more genuine and honest on McCain!!!
That is irrelevant now with Fred dropping out. He was gaining steam but he needed that steam back in August, September and October. He waited too long to get on key!! But he was the truest conservative and the most like Reagan!!! Boy I miss that man...Reagan was one of a kind like Rush states. Republicans owe everything to Reagan!
And McCain IS NO REAGAN..HE IS A DISGRACE AND A LIBERAL IN EVERY WAY. HE FOOLS NO ONE AND I COULD CARE LESS IF FREED ENDORSES THAT MAN..I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR MR.AMNESTY AND ARROGANCE...he is no maverick...he had hindered President Bush and the Republicans on so many important issues that would have helped this country. He is a joke...and he should retire. He is way too comfortable with that DRUNK KENNEDY for my taste! Can anyone name anything he has done good in 30 years in the Senate??? Did he ever aspouse Reagan? Funny how he uses Reagan's name now??? Why? Because in votes in the primary where Republicans Vote (how novel in a Republican Primary) NO INDEPENDENTS OR DEMOCRATS can help him..HE DOES NOT STAND A CHANCE. Florida will be the beginning of his fall and all the Liberal Pundits and Republicans (like those idiots Bill Krystal or Michael Medved) will not be able to save him in true Republican Territory with Conservatives. HE IS DONE!!! We shall see if Rush, Sean, Levine and Others are right!!! I think they will have a laugh soon over McCain's demise. AS WILL I!!
McCain is a LIBERAL and a JERK!!! As for Mitt, I like the man. He is not perfect but he is closer on his domestic agenda and foreign agenda to Fred than the others. He is a smart man and being a Republican elected in MASS with all those Liberals is not an easy thing to do. Yes he swtiched to pro-life but he MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE!!! And he understands the Illegal Problem, Taxes, Security and Business. Plus he is a big family man...one can tell just by looking at his wife and 5 sons. That is a family guy! That matters to me. He has values...and unlike the SCUM CLINTONS...he is what he is not what some poll makes him nor does he tell you want you want to hear but he does tell you what be believes. I think he will be great to take on Hillary the Communist!
Go Mitt..I live in Florida and your momentum is gro

Your momentum in Florida is growing Mitt. On local talk show today the host asked Fred supporters to call and tell him who they would support with Fred out of the race. Over 65 percent went to Mitt and the other 35 percent went to Rudy and Huckabee. None to McInsane!! Mitt is picking up his stride and lets face it ladies and gentlemen if it was not for Rush, Sean, Hugh and Levine Mitt most likely would have left the race after New Hampshire. But Rush and Sean encouraged him and the others because the way the primary in states like New Hampshire are done. Rush was very clear as was Sean and Levine that the big states like Florida, where Republicans only can vote (how novel) were yet to come and would have major sway in determining the candidate. AS THEY SHOULD. I WILL DE DARNED IF I AM GOING TO LET A PUNY STATE LIKE NEW HAMPSHIRE TELL ME MY CANDIDATE!! In the past that really was the way it has been done. Look at South Carolina. Cripe McCain only got 33 percent (less than he did in 2000) and notice how all the Liberals in the media and some Republican twits are trying to say McCain is the frontrunner..WHERE ON MARS!!! They are trying to undercut US and force the Liberal McCain on US!! BUT thanks to Rush and Sean their folly has been exposed. They know trouble is coming for McCain not that Republicans Only can vote...Mitt being encouraged by the Pillars of Conservatism (TALK RADIO HOSTS LIKE RUSH, SEAN AND LEVINE) has stayed in the race and look what is happening!!! Thank goodness Mitt has the money as well. Boy it just must annoy those Liberals that in the end WE REPUBLICANS (MOSTLY CONSERVATIVE) are actually going to determine OUR CANDIDATE!! I LOVE TALK RADIO...DOWN WITH McCAIN!!!

TO CHRISTIAN AMERICANS
It may seem difficult when you have to defend Christianity from latter-day idols like Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter, but just remember, it's a walk in the park compared to the sufferings of those martyrs who faced lions and flames and nails.
People have sacrificed their prosperity, careers, health, comforts, and even their lives in order to pass on to you an uncorrupted faith. And people have suffered and died in order to protect your civil liberties, freedom of thought, freedom of expression, and freedom of religion.
You don't have to accept that anti-Christian nonsense is "just the same" as the faith that has been passed down to you since Jesus chose his disciples, especially not just because people scream "bigot!" at you, and claim that winning an election is more important than the Gospel of Christ Jesus.
Saint Luke: "Inasmuch as many have taken in hand to set in order a narrative of those things which have been fulfilled among us, just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered them to us, it seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write to you an orderly account, most excellent Theophilus [Lover of God], that you may know the certainty of those things in which you were instructed."
Jesus Christ: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you. You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden."
JESUS CHRIST: BLASPHEMY IS UNFORGIVABLE:
Jesus Christ: “Blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
Jesus Christ: “Because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”
Jesus Christ: “Whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword.”

Did Bishop Romney Get Einstein’s Ghost?
According to the Mormon Church, Moses Maimonides, Albert Einstein and Menachem Begin are all Mormons, since their ghosts were baptized by the Church.
Bishop Romney has also baptized the dead, but he refuses to name names. Is it possible that he is the one who converted Einstein to the cult of Joseph Smith?
Considering his prominent role within the Church, and the fact that his father was a Patriarch of the Church, that wouldn’t be unusual.
I’d actually like to know, but Bishop Romney refuses to discuss any of his religious beliefs except for lying about The Holy Bible (which is described in The [superior] Book of Mormon as a corrupted product of The Whore of Babylon) and the return of Christ (Bishop Romney denied Mormon dogma that Christ will reign from the American Zion in Missouri).
Oh well, I look forward to “President Romney” coming under more scrutiny.

I don't understand all these people voting for Giuliani. I live in NYC and had a front seat view of his contempt for civil liberties. Yeah, he was better than Dinkins; that's not saying a lot. The odd thing is that people I talk to here agree with me that he's an "authoritarian" (since I don't like to use the F-word), but argue that that's what the city needed. Sounds to me like what people were saying in the '30s (oops, there I go again).
If you laughed when the lefties went on about Bushitler and AshKKKroft and how the USA PATRIOT Act had turned this into a police state, you'll laugh out the other side of your mouth if Rudy gets his hands on the reins of power. He's a bully. Think Janet Reno in drag. Or Elliot Spitzer. McCain spits on the first amendment; Giuliani spits on all the amendments. Or rather acts as if he's never heard of them. And this goes all the way back to his time as US Attorney.
So I'll reluctantly vote for Romney, though I'm not giving him any money or time. But if McCain, Giuliani, or Huckabee get the nomination, my choices don't include voting Republican. I'll either vote for the Democrat or write in the Ghost of Barry Goldwater (or Thompson, or perhaps Dick Cheney, whom I'd love to see as president, but I know that's never going to happen).

AMERICANS, GROW UP... Think about your future, religion is of your own choice... MORMONISM believes in the separation of state and church. That says more than any other Christian religion especially Huckaboom!
There is no craziness about Mormonism, period. HUSH YOUR MOUTH and OPEN YOUR EYES we are voting for president not a pastor or a bishop. CLEAR?

Mr Shuckleford YOU are high. Flip-Flopney CANT win. The Democraps will pound him on the head with his support of gay rights, same sex marriage and abortion. He can't escape the past. He is not now nor has he ever been conservative. He is rude and lets face is Washington is broken, but he can't fix it. Sorry I unlike most of you understand the role of the President. He has to have a congress supporting him to fix the problems.
He is a lair and he doesn't get the war on terrorism. He has said in the past that he would take control from the ground commanders and give them to pentagon lawyers. That alone shows he DOESN"T get it. Having been a gound commander in Iraq, I know for some decision you don't have time to find some lawdawg to ask him if you can shoot back. The best thing the president can do is support his commanders and not try to undermine them. Or esle you wind up with a General as the President (see Pakiland for example)
All you should all keep in mind that no other issue matters more than winning the war against Radical Islam. This war has been going on for 1400 years and will continue until Islam wins or is destroyed. There is no if, ands or buts about it. This is not a war that can be done on the cheap. there is no home by christmas BS. A CEO (Romney)would cut and run from this war and Islam will get stronger and you all might as well get started on your breads and get your bitches a hijab before they get here. As for me I will be in the mountains fighting them as they come on my land. I won't bury them I will just burn their carcas. and I am not crazy. I unlike Rusty am a college grad.

Get over the Mormon thing. Unless he is more likely to do the bidding of his church than a Catholic (president) would do the bidding of the Pope, it is a non-issue or a positive. I have lived around them most of my adult life, and I think the beginnings of their church is a joke, and I think some more recent "revelations" are a joke, and the idea that they get to elect (not what they call it) a prophet is a joke.
All that negative being said, the Mormons believe in family values, have lot's of kids, it is church teaching to actually make time each week for the family (family home evening, TV turns off, board games etc come out), the church welfare system has recipients WORK when possible, they have canneries for food prep, they are the #1 supporters of the Boy Scouts, they teach traditional values.
Not all Mormons are conservative, Note that Harry Reid is Mormon, and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) is a buddy of Sen. Kennedy (D-Chappaquiddick).
And returning to the issue of jokes, at least they don't put out those lunatic TV shows where people call in for prayers and prophesy, which some evangelicals believe in. They don't handle snakes. They tend to be educated, they don't bang their sisters. If Huckabee supporters can be convinced that the above isn't all bad, then maybe they can swing his way too.

Brian Akira,
It seems that Matthew had the right idea that "by their fruits ye shall know them." It would appear that your remarks about a religion, which should not even be a test for the presidency is exactly what you are trying to push. Every time a person pushes against the Constitution of our great country, the Constitution is weakened. Now, I am certain that most people blogging on this post want to have our Constitution strengthened and not hampered. Religion is irrelevent in politics and there should be no religious test for the office of the presidency. I think it should be a mute point among all who participate in the democratic process.

I'll throw in my two cents on religion (probably what it's worth). The U.S. is not the new Jerusalem. We are fallen people in a fallen world. I think Mormon theology is badly mistaken. Still, I think we have to do the best we can with what we have. I reconcile my vote for Romney with my belief that J.C. is the saviour and light of the world by looking at some examples in the old testament where the Jews were saved over and over again by pagan empires that didn't worship the living God. If He can use pharaoah, Cyrus, Darius, etc., He can use Romney.

Another Reason Romney is better than McCain:
"even Sen. McCain, in a debate on Jan. 5, asked, "Why shouldn't we be able to reimport drugs from Canada?" answering himself, "It's because of the power of the pharmaceutical companies." When former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney urged him not to cast the drug makers as the "big bad guys," Sen. McCain countered, "Well, they are."

Dingbats: Mormons follow Jesus!!! Just because they think he walked the earth in N. America doesn't mean they minimize the New Testament, and the teachings of Jesus. Honestly, if it wasn't for the bloated welfare that supports illegals, and the general support for illegals in Utah, it would be a great place to live. Do we know if the folks in charge in Utah are Democrats or Republicans? Liberals, Moderates, or Conservatives?
Religious affiliation means very little - Look how little impact the Pope has over the lifestyles of Roman Catholics like JFK and Teddy Kennedy.
"Honestly, if it wasn't for the bloated welfare that supports illegals, and the general support for illegals in Utah, it would be a great place to live. As long as Romney is willing to agree to not replicate that in the nation, more power to him."
Anyhow, the latest polls (2 days old) in Florida show upwards movement only for Romney - everyone else appears stuck - if that momentum continues he could have a clear win in Florida and have a powerful advantage into super Tuesday.

In Utah, we are mostly conservative Republican. However, we have had a Democrat Catholic for Governor in Scott Matheson in the last decade. The recent mayor of Salt Lake City was Democrat in Rocky Anderson. But, everywhere else, we are as conservative a state as you will ever find. Romney is an impressive, more-than- capable candidate, one with a cool head. McCain is far too explosive to have his finger on nuclear options. Go on the web, and look up (McCain + anger). We can't afford him. ...While Giuliani is acceptable, if only in a pinch.
And dear Andrew: If you think that Mormons teach God "had sex" with Mary, you got that straight out of the bigot-box, not out of any authentic Mormon source. Do a little research yourself before smearing Mormons with offensive and false accusations. Look at the overall quality of people who are Mormons, and you have your answer to such questions.

First, we are electing a president, NOT a preacher.
Second, Romney's father was elected Gov of Michigan 3x---so his religion obviously caused NO problems there. They do not have a large Mormon population there.
Romney just won Michigan 10 points over McCain---so obviously Michigan's citizens were not concerned about Romney's religion.
NOT ONE article, complaint, etc.----has ever come out of Massachusetts about Romney being a problem because of his religion. They do not have a large Mormon population there!!
Romney captured a larger percentage of the evangelical votes in both Michigan and Nevada----obviously these people realized that they were electing a president, NOT a preacher.

MORMON BISHOP PRESIDENT ROMNEY
Mitt Romney is a Mormon bishop.
He is ordained as a bishop. Right now he is not responsible for any parish.
According to the Mormon cult, a bishop is responsible for a parish (in other words, he is more like the equivalent of a Christian priest), but remains a bishop forever, unless he is excommunicated or apostate. Therefore, Romney is now a bishop.
Incredibly, incredibly, not one single reporter/journalist in a nation of 300,000,000 people has thought to ask the Republican Party's front runner in the presidential race if he is in fact still a Mormon bishop, and if he will be a bishop if he becomes president.
It buggers belief!
Organizationally, the Mormon equivalent to a Christian bishop (with a diocese) would be a Stake President. Romney was also a State President. That position is not an ordination.
Also incredibly, Romney does not include his two years as a missionary or his bishopric (including seven years of daily service) or his stake presidency in his resume or biographical details on any websites associated with him.
One thing that Mormons try to say is that he is "not really" a bishop because he wasn't paid. Amazing sophistry. In fact, it's irrelevant whether he was/is paid, since it's his vocation. But if they want to make a point of that, obviously it's something he's dedicated to since he serves without pay.
What sort of a country is the US where a bishop can run for president, lead in one party's race, be in the news every single day, and hardly a single citizen is even aware of it, and the MSM and the "conservative" windbag punditocracy have not the slightest interest!?
What is wrong with you people?

Brian,
Romney has been an elected official before and has not instituted any Mormon religious edicts.
As a Christian, I see no problem with Mitt Romney being president even if he is a bishop in his church.
Huckabee on the other hand...

According to the Mormon cult, a bishop is responsible for a parish (in other words, he is more like the equivalent of a Christian priest), but remains a bishop forever, unless he is excommunicated or apostate. Therefore, Romney is now a bishop.
It seems more likely his position was the equivalent of a christian church Elder-- not priest-- who serves his term and then leaves, yet remains an Elder forever.
By the way, Mormonism is a religion, not a cult. A cult requires a single individual that everybody is gaga about and has sex, then drinks his Koolaid. Mormonism isn't like that.

Jesusland,
Actually, a Bishop in the Mormon church is called for a period of five years and that is it. However, he may also be called Bishop afterword by members of his congregation just out of due respect for their previous service. It is like calling him Governor Romney even though he no longer serves as governor of any state.

Incidentally, no person has ever recieved a religious edict from the Mormon Church. As a member, I am still trying to figure our Senator Harry Reid (D - Nevada) who shares the same religion with Mitt Romney. I don't think a person can find two men who are more direct opposits than these two.

In terms of organization, the Mormon Church is setup with a First Presidency, a Council of Twelve Apostles (these two bodies act as a board of directors), two quorums of Seventy who are responsible for the mission of the Church (Proclaim the Gospel, Redeem the Dead, and Perfect the Saints). These Seventies are usually Area Presidents and generally serve for a period of time also before receiving Emeritus status. Then there are the Stake Presidents who are directly responsible for 5 to 7 congregations and finally a Bishop who is over one congregation. This is the hirarchal structure of the Mormon faith throughout the world. Those who are called as Presiding Bishops are like the President of the Business of the Church and acts under the authority of the First Presidency and Twelve Apostles of the Church. The First Presidency, Twelve Apostles, Presiding Bishopric, and Seventies are called General Authorities and they are responsible for Church policies and procedures. The Stake Presidencies and Bishoprics have no authority for church positions or policies. Everything is handed down to them from the General Authorities.

And let's not forget about Senator Orrin Hatch. All these paranoid critics who have a problem with Mormons need to wake up and realize that Senator Hatch has been on the Judiciary Committe for years! Hatch has one of the best conservative records ever, and he's endorsed Romney for president. 'Nuff said.

Rusty, sorry it took me so long to reply.
Since everyone was professing undying allegiance to conservatism early on, I made my own formula for judgement. 2third on past history and 1 third on what they are saying now. I think that's fair. You be the judge.
Past history for Mitt is pretty clear. He was not a conservative until he decided to run for office. I give him points on current pronouncements but then if he needs to he backslides. (Michigan) Bottom- line and overall he pretty moderate and a squishy conservative. Better than Huckabee and McCain but not at all inspiring or convincing about conservative convictions.

So, Mitt did GREAT in the debate last night. He far and away had the best answers on issues, and he is funny.
If Guiliani was not liberal on gay marriage/unions and pro-choice, he'd be my second choice. Still any Republican would serve us much better than Obama or Billary.
Vote for the best and most presidential guy...
Vote for MITT ROMNEY!!!

Uhh... is there a slot for "none of the above?"
I am not enjoying the options we are being left to choose between on the GOP...
And no you may not interpret my comment to mean that i in anyway would ever throw a vote away on anyone in the democratic party either.

McCain is now lower than pond scum!! You have to pull up this article, so that you can see a picture of Juan Hernandez---he was the one who was on TV continuously when they were trying to shove comprehensive immigration reform down our throats----trying to tell us that the fence would be a problem and that we need illegals!!!
John McCain’s open-borders outreach director: The next DHS secretary?
By Michelle Malkin • January 25, 2008 10:03 AM
"Hispanic Republicans here in Nevada had a chance to speak by conference to Sen. John McCain and many of us were appalled to learn that his National Director of Hispanic Outreach is none other that Dr. Juan Hernandez, notorious for his open borders stance. How can McCain reconcile the fact that he says he “learnt his lesson w/the American people” with choosing as his Hispanic Ntl. Dir. someone whose views and interests are so clearly anti-security and not in the interest of the American people or for that matter us legal Hispanic immigrants. Can someone question him directly on this?”

McCain Means: Amnesty, Taxes, Liberal Judges, First Amendment Erosion, Free Trade Dogma, War
By Patrick J. Buchanan
January 24, 2008
"In 2004, the voters of Arizona, by 56 percent to 44 percent, enacted Proposition 200, requiring proof of citizenship before an individual may vote or receive state benefits. Forty-six percent of Hispanics voted for Prop. 200, giving the lie to those who say Hispanics support the illegal invasion of their country.
Over 190,000 Arizonans petitioned to put Prop. 200 on the ballot. As it simply required proof of citizenship before receiving the benefits and privileges of citizenship, who could oppose it?
Answer: the entire GOP congressional delegation, led by Sen. John McCain.
This is the same John McCain who battled the border fence and colluded with Teddy Kennedy on the amnesty bill rejected by Congress last year after a national uproar.
Bottom line: If the presidential race is between Hillary and Amnesty John, the border security battle is over and lost. As Laura Ingraham asks, "If Congress passes McCain-Kennedy in 2009, would President McCain sign it?"
For conservatives, the stakes could not be higher.
For on the great controversies, McCain has sided as often with the
Democrats and the Big Media that pay him court as with conservatives."

Except that Huckabee had the same federalist position as Thompson when he was governor. It's one thing for him to change, but to also criticize others for approaching abortion in that manner, shows he's a hypocrite while also pandering.
Also, the federalist approach is the one that has the most change for long term prolife success.

McCain is a RINO! Don't be fooled.
Did you know?...that last year, John McCain approached John KERRY (as in DEMOCRAT flip-flopper Kerry) to be McCain's "running mate/VP," in this general election??!!
When questioned, McCain said, "well, John Kerry is a 'very' good friend of mine. I would not go over to the other side, but would try and get Kerry to come to the GOP side." Gasp! OMG!
Isn't this a really good indication, warning, of what/who John McCain really is? He's a RINO, so beware all you good, genuine GOPers out there.
McCain votes many times with the Democrats on important issues.
No wonder the NYT endorsed a liberal McCain, just like that paper is.

Why McCain is Wrong for the Right
Posted by Chuck Muth
January 24, 2008 at 11:25 am
GOP USA
"For conservatives with long memories, John McCain is about the worst possible Republican presidential nominee - unless, of course, anyone still thinks Mike Huckabee actually has a shot at the brass ring, or you like seeing the GOP split asunder. And the reason why can perhaps best be summed up in two words: McCain-Feingold.
Sen. McCain’s campaign finance reform bill - which he pushed relentlessly, almost to the exclusion of everything else - was a frontal attack on the right of free speech. Not commercial or pornographic free speech, mind you. Political free speech. The kind of speech the Founders clearly had in mind when they emphatically declared that Congress shall make no law abridging.
An even bigger problem is that too many Republicans actually agree with John McCain on restricting political speech. Mike Huckabee, for instance.
McCain-Feingold is a constitutional abomination. If John McCain can chuck the First Amendment overboard, no other constitutional protections would be safe under his watch either. Indeed, Sen. McCain has also gone after the Second Amendment with efforts to close the so-called “gun show loophole.” But for gun rights advocates, that was no “loophole.” It was just another chapter in the gun-grabbers never-ending quest to disarm American citizens.
Recall, also, that it was Sen. McCain who led the “Gang of 14” which undercut the GOP attempt to break Harry Reid’s filibusters of conservative judges. Many conservative judicial nominees have never received so much as the courtesy of an up-or-down vote, thanks to Sen. McCain and his band of moderate Republicans."
