Get a quarter, toss, heads Ruger, tails Browning, either way you'll win.

Rimfire pistols and rifles are soooo fun! Cost effective way of teaching, learning, and maintaining the basics!!!

I have a Beretta U22, and never even batted an eye at the styling - didn't even think about it. I liked the interchangeable barrel, mine is six inches.
As for looking "spacey" I put an ATN holo sight on top, and I have to admit it does look ready to vaporize aliens. Nice shooter, reliable and accurate, and as you note there are lots of good reasons to shoot .22. I carry a 1911 but shoot the Neos much more often.
Interestingly, my other Beretta is a CX4 Storm carbine in .45 ACP, which literally is a science fiction weapon. I got mine before Battlestar Galactica, though, so I don't have that as an excuse.

Walther SP22, tons of interchangeable parts and upgrades and a decent price to start.
I have a Walther P22, another rimfire which can be customized with cool stuff. The plus is that it looks like a bigger-caliber handgun rather than the rest of the .22 plinkers which have a habit of looking like...well...plinkers.
I have put everything through that pistol and suffered not a burp.

I'm currently trying to talk my manager's husband out of a classic Colt .22 six-shooter. He's not impressed with the accuracy, but it looks and feels like my Colt Trooper .357, which I've shot since it was my dad's in the 60's, so I think it would be perfect for me. I'm pretty sure I could shoot it better than he does, in any case.
I shoot .38 Spl. with the Trooper for plinking now - in fact, I almost never shoot .357 Mag. through it because it's expensive self-flagellating punishment - but a .22 would be far better for shooting beer cans and "stuff."
As with .22 semi-auto rifles, I've never been a fan of semi-auto pistols either. Just as I like the feel and action of pump .22 rifles, I love the feel, action - and romance - of revolvers. Just a paleo-wheelgun guy, I guess.

Do Not Buy A Walther.
I purchased a P22 when they first hit the market, lets just say it was a massive pile of FAIL. It experienced every type of jam known to man, with every brand of ammo I put through it.
After three replacement pistols and about six months of lies and shitty customer service from "Walther USA" (owned by Smith & Wesson) I finally traded in the last replacement, new in the box, on a Taurus PT-111 and haven't looked back.
I had a phone conversation with the VP of Walther USA who said he would *finally* refund my money if the last replacement pistol didn't function as advertised. The safety lever fell out of the side of the slide while firing through the second magazine. He didn't get me a refund, just another POS P22 (that I traded).
Because of that experience with customer service I'll never buy another Walther, or Smith.
YMMV.

Find an old Colt woodsman. Solid steel, accurate, reliable.

I have the Walther P22 and love it--especially at the price ($275). It's made under license by S&W here in the states and it comes standard with a threaded barrel and knurled thread protector. The action is smooth and the barrel stays locked during cycling. This means that a standard non-boostered AR-15/.223 suppressor can be fitted if you buy the commonly available thread adaptor. File the class III paperwork and get yourself one of the many suppressors that are out there while you still can. The Sig Mosquito also comes with a threaded barrel.

If any get the chance try a Browning Buckmark. Bought one years ago and traded up for the 10 in heavy barrel, dang good plinker.

Buy a Ruger (I prefer the Mk II models), an S&W Model 41, Browning Buckmark and a High Standard.
And a few CASES of standard velocity ammo.
Then post a range report letting all of us know which one you find shoots best.
... We'll all be waiting ...

A new Sig Mosquito is a great option.
I've put some 1500-2000 rounds through mine with no hiccups. They take the Remington Golden bullet .22s just fine (about $13 for 550 rounds). They don't like Federal .22s, though.
For whatever reason, the US ones only come with one magazine. Top Gun Supply has extra mags for the cheapest price online. Good folks there, too.

I love my bull barrel MKII stainless Ruger. I replaced the thin plastic factory grips with a thicker set of custom rosewood panels that fit my hand perfectly. I also had a trigger job (replacement) by a qualified professional, replaced all of the springs, polished all internal stamped steel parts and replaced the front factory site with a Wichita blade. The plus side of owning a Ruger is its highly tweakable and parts are plentiful.

Another comment on my Beretta - when I bought it, another customer in the store mentioned that he had one as well as a Ruger MkIII. He said as much as he loved the Ruger, the action of the Beretta was so smooth that after shooting it the Ruger felt like whacking two cinder blocks together.
And I just realized my CX4 is not the spaciest looking gun I own. That's gotta be my FNH PS2000, with an Aimpoint sight. With it I could clean out all of those pussies on BSG. And wipe out Stargate SG-1 for an encore.

I would also recommend taking a look at High Standard pistols. One of my first handguns was a HS Sportking, and among the many small and large bore guns I have shot, that little .22 is my favorite to take out and plink with...and accurate as hell!!
