Misty, if I lived a little bit closer I'd volunteer for gardening duty. The other side of the world is a bit of a commute though.
So, I hereby throw down the gauntlet.
Please volunteer to do a spot of gardening if you know you live closer to Misty than the thousands and thousands of kilometres that seperates myself from her good self.
Please.
Ones? Again? woohoo

Having seen your garden, I know what's really going on for I've had it too.
Somebody thinks your "collection" of cars and knackered fence is lowering the tone of the area, and is using the rats ploy to give you hassle.
I only got the one visit, but then I knew who my "accuser" was, so I may have accidently told the council man that there be no rats but if I was a betting man I'd try house X.....

Rats can live in clean and tidy gardens as well. And indeed in houses and sewers.

> (and part of the pond by mistake)
So how wet was he?
Did you mention that 'one of his colleagues' had called the other day? They take a dim view of being impersonated.
Which reminds me - in case of any further bother, do you know a certain senior environmental health officer in Ealing who grew up a stone's throw from you? His father was a [dreadful] dentist. You know my email.

Misty - I don't live close enough to help you out but a freind of mine has MS and he rents out his garden as an allotment - that way he gets the gardening done, makes a little bit of money and also gets lots of free veg when there's a glut - http://www.moneymagpie.com/artic...-as-allotments/
try this link (don't know how to make it a proper link sorry)

Organise a re-enactment practice weekend there. That'll flatten down the weeds (and anything else).

"She then asked me if I'd ever seen any rats (or signs thereof)"
I know the sign for hump back bridge and even level crossing but what does the sign for rats leaving garden look like?

It sounds as though you should be looking out for the two-legged variety of rat.

Have you thought about signing up for this?
http://www.rivercottage.net/landshare/
You'd have somebody maintaining your garden and get fresh fruit and veg in return, not to mention the bonus of no hassle from the DWP AND sticking two fingers up to your complaining neighbour

I love the idea of River Cottage - would be great if you have a seperate entrance to the garden, (as opposed to them having to go through the house) - and, apart from all that lovely free veg and having your garden kept together, you'll be helping someone who might not have a garden, or be able to have one, but who is passionate about it!
I'm in the last throes of a community gardening project...these guys didn't have a garden, we created one for them...and they just adore it...we've had garlic and lettuce grown already!! And thousands of flowerlooms all over the place...just lovely :o)
