I remember when I first met Nick some decades ago, I was struck by how intellectually generous and curious and kind he was -- even toward a kid from the 'burbs as I was back then. Over all that time and across oceans too, his presence has remained: I first heard the news earlier today from my dear friend Helen Grace in Hong Kong sent to me in Los Angeles, his death sending ripples of grief around the world. To have this be his fate and that of his daughter too is horrific, incomprehensible to me and so tragic. My heart goes out to his family and especially to his son-in-law and the children. We will miss him.

More sadness too with the death yesterday of Jan McCulloch, editor of Art Almanac for 30 years.
Apparently Jan suffered a massive asthma attack in her sleep - certainly a much gentler death than Nick's. Jan was such a lovely, generous and giving person who will be sadly missed.
It seems extraordinary that we could have lost two such wonderful people in a matter of days.
