I saw it tonight.

o'Reilly will wax poetic about the "pot smokers" who watch Jon's show after he does another white's only drinking fountains story about immigration tonight

We have a real friend in Jon because he is not afraid to tell it like it is. O'Reilly is a ghoul and Stephen Colbert in his satire is off putting to the right because they always thought that Archy Bunker was the kind of an American one is supposed to be. Satire is often lost on the ignorant and our population is brimming with ignorance, about everything, history, geography, politics, war, etc., etc.
The early 20th century American social critic and humorist H. L. Mencken, known for his "definitions" of terms, defined a demagogue as "one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots."
How, then, should we categorize Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, and their ilk? To them Left is anyone who doesn't agree with them. Simple definition by simplistic minds.

Frankly, I think Stewert was on Point. The Dems should not have nixed the Debate over Ailles joke. ( It was pretty harmless to be totaly fair unlike Fox News, it sounded like something Leno would say and probably wrote. I thought it was more of a dig at bush. Shocking! )
The Dems should have said the truth, that Fox News is nothing more then a GOP mouthpiece and we dont think it will represent us in a fair setting and we are sick of taking shots and lies from this bully arm of the GOP. I think that was the gist of what Stewert was saying and why he was critical of the Dems.
Plus unlike the Right wing we can take a joke, Right? I know you sure wont see any jabs at the GOP or Bush on the Fox " Comedy " show the Half hour news hour.

Reno gets it too. Millions lost inrevenue because of Harry Reid. Dems will get the ass kick in 08.

Yes they will. Comedy Central does not give permission for people to use it on YouTube.

That being said, I watched the show. Anyone see Stewart's take on vice presidents? Priceless, and should be required viewing.

Bill Maher said the same thing on Larry King Live. To be honest, they are both right, if you don't do a debate because its on FOX you are pretty just re-enforcing stupid conservatives' perception of progressives as weak.

Chrish, this clip from last night, was one that should be shown over and over. I am amazed that the only people in the media asking the real questions are the comedians.
http://www.comedycentral.com/mot...? ml_video=83639

Jon Stewart sums it all up with one question:
"What the f*ck?"

Mario The Irrelevant…..From your right wing perch all you can do is “Squawk” . I wonder where you view the center? Enjoy the minority.

As the Church Lady would way - "isn't it special" that all those nice right wingers, who love democrats, are so concerned that their fellow right wingers might not be able to see a democratic PRIMARY debate - a PRIMARY that so many right wingers will be voting in.

It has been established that Fox is a republican propganda organ. It is derided and mocked daily on the Daily Show and Colbert. It's credibility has been questioned and now its legitimacy had been questioned. The democrats told Fox to go F themselves and Fox doesn't like getting so publicly dissed.

Actually, being the minority is working out pretty well these days for Republicans. It's giving the public a taste of how inept the left is. It takes them to task on all that 'squawking' they're always engaging in. I enjoyed the hidden camera video of the activist being chewed up and spit out by one of their own, calling them liberal idiots. Did Newshounds 'report' on that?

Inept? Like this? How many times we heard this song and dance routine? Is Cheney, oh I don't know, nuts or just senile, or just so corrupt he doesn't know the truth anymore Dan?

Stewart M. Powell
Hearst Newspapers
Tuesday, March 13, 2007

Vice President Dick Cheney, lashing out at Democrats for the first time since the felony conviction of Lewis "Scooter" Libby, his former top deputy, resumed his controversial claims Monday that the war in Iraq is the central front in the worldwide U.S. response to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Cheney linked Iraq and al Qaeda even though post-invasion reports by the Senate Intelligence Committee and the presidential Commission on Intelligence Capabilities found no link between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda before the U.S.-led invasion on March 19, 2003.

Actually, being the minority is working out pretty well these days for Republicans.

Is that why all the polls show that you're still very much in the minority?

This could explain why so many posting here appear to be right on the edge of being full time moon-bats.....You get your news & talking points from comedy central. Jon was correct,,,this was a real "softball" joke. The reason for pulling out of this debate is there wouldn't be "softball" scripted questions,as even your man from Ohio noted.
H.L. Mencken could be describing the newest "pet rock"---Al Gore's carbon offsets.

As Jon Stewart would say, "whaaaa." No it's not democrats who are unaware, it's the Fox audience, who in a survey done by the University of Maryland, proved to be rather unaware of current events. Stewart's news is satire (and it still presents more information than Fox!) that appeals to a broad range of informed people - especially college students who, unless they're in Bible College, tend to be cynical and informed. Thing is - to appreciate satire one needs to have a certain grasp of reality - somthing that the non nuanced Fox audience just doesn't get!

And those who think that Stewart is just comedy (it's called "satire" - duh) they obviously don't watch the show (too intellectual) because if they did, they would realize that Stewart has a nightly interview segment where he speaks to politicians (on both sides), authors, actors, and other interesting people. As such, many interesting books have been featured (Stewart's fans are literate) ranging from Dean's book on the new "authoritarian" republican party to Reza Aslan's "No God but God." But Fox promotes great tomes like those written by O'Reilly and Hannity - books that just reinforce the right wing memes - are Fox fans literate?

bent | 03.14.07 - 11:17 am |

Jon Stewart never said he's "fair and balanced" because he's a satirist - duuuh! He skewers everbody - as does SNL. Colbert's satire is brilliant as he is lampooning an actual "news" person - and he does it so well - hence the awards - which the object of his mimicry has never received.

So, do you hold John Daily to the same standard as any other commentator on Fox?
bent | 03.14.07 - 11:17 am | #

No, bent. Why should we hold Stewart to the standards of journalism, when he isn't a journalist? Fox bills themselves as a news organization and journalists, and as the Newshounds prove here everyday, they aren't.

Jon Stewart is right. Don't make up excuses just don't go. Just say no to right wing stupidity. There is not a person in the country that does not know what Fox News is all about. Nobody is going to think less of you for saying no thanks to a debate of the Democratic Candidates moderated by Fox. Have the Republican Candidates agreed to a debate moderated by Air America? Have the Republicans agreed to debate period for that matter? Has Fox News sponsored a debate of all the Republican Candidates so their viewers can know what the hell they're really voting for? The Democrats have agreed to several debates and this one will go on without Fox too. Fox should concentrate on the Party they're whoring for. Nevada Democrats all need a smack upside the head for even considering this in the first place. No we don't need to pretend Fox is a news network.

I agree. The joke was a weak pretext to get out of the debate. As Stewart, said, it was as much a putdown on Bush as anything else. However, his other jokes were so bad that they sounded like they came from the "1/2-hour Comedy Hour."

The Democrats would have been better off listing Fox's numerous reporting biases -- spreading the myth that Obama went to a Madrassah; having someone (Dick Morris) with an admitted Hillary vendetta on regularly as a political analyst; coddling Coulter after her "faggot" remark; Gibson saying a vote for Democrats "is a vote for the al Qaeda" (2004) or "is a vote for the terrorists" (2006), etc.

The big question is why did the Nevada Democrats agree in the first place? It's not like Fox changed in the past couple weeks.

Newshounds, in general, seems to be nothing more than a troll operation. It was started by George Soros and Moveon.org money and it has to be funded by deep pockets like that. You can not have a site like this without a lot of money poured into it. All these far left "bitching sites" are heavily funded by Soros and other wealthy liberal, godless traitors. The Dems like Pelosi, Obey, Lanny Davis are beginning to realize that the extreme left has taken over the party. Christian Dems are not going to buy into the constant moaning and groaning about gay rights, abortion and caving to the fundamentalist Moslem terrorists. The far left is convinced that they can write off all the South and still win in 08. I smell another 68 and 72 coming. It is going to get dicey in DC this weekend as the far left rock throwing anarchists are going to run up against some patriotic Viet Nam Vets at the Viet Nam Wall. Jane Fonda will be there. Will the NHs be there?

Hey Dan, they will delete anything you put up, especially if you show that they are lying about something. It is essentially GROUND ZERO for the HATE AMERICA FIRST crowd.

misinformation and lies is all the few remaining lil aWol supporters have

in fact, if you look closely at the last 7 years

it''s ALL they EVER had, eh?

move on is transparent.....their goals, money, strategies are right there on their site for ANYONE to peruse....

maybe that's what really bothers them the most, besides the fact that a GROUP of Americans averaged giving $45 apiece to effect political change

the GOP gets the majority of their funding in much larger chunks, from CORPORATE PACS

eh?

Anyone who understands the money control of US politics can see why an org like move on or soros might bother the rwrs....

whose money comes from corps....they don't expect to have to SHARE the ability to raise cash and effect political change

and that it would be

the people

instead of corporations

really pisses them off

hence we see their flying fear monkeys spewing lies and misinformation

why else would they be here?

debate?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAA!

eh?

(Comment from buzz-it on the orginal article about this.)

"The old adage "it's not the crime that gets you, it's the cover-up" is one that many bloggers feel should have been taken to heart. "The Dems should have said the truth," wrote Scottie, "that Fox News is nothing more then a GOP mouthpiece and we don't think it will represent us in a fair setting and we are sick of taking shots and lies from this bully arm of the GOP."

Exactly!

As for what Bill Maher said: ""Win an away game," admonished Bill Maher on Larry King Live. "If you can't stand up to Chris Wallace, can you stand up to the terrorists let alone the Republican Party?"" I'm happy that Maher finally got part of it correct, but disappointed that he's applying it in the wrong situation and the wrong way.

What Maher and others are advocating has nothing to do with standing up to someone or something but is like kids allowing themselves to be taunted into doing something stupid and unproductive by taunts of "I dare you! You're chicken if you don't!"

As for "Citing his agreement with Maher, tito blogged, "If you don't do a debate because it's on Fox you are pretty [much] just re-enforcing stupid conservatives' perception of progressives as weak.""

Er, tito, very often being strong and standing up to tyranny means refusing to play by their rules on their totally rigged playing field. As for "just re-enforcing stupid conservatives' perception", tito doesn't appear to get it that no matter what one does or doesn't do, says or doesn't say, the far-right is going to believe what it wants to believe regardless.

And what kind of questions will the Fox panel ask Democrats? You can bet that just about every single one of them will be of the "When did you stop beating your wife/husband?" variety. With Fox News's track record, the network is not going to say to itself and its hatchet people, "OK, guys, this is serious. Because this is the Democratic presidential debate, we have to stop being such partisan jerks and get 'fair and balanced' for real." It's not going to happen. And you can bet that plenty of quotes from the debate will be taken out of context and spun to present every single Democrat in the worst possible light. Because Fox retains so many of the rights showing footage from the debates, it will be hard if not impossible to counter with the context.

One tactic that abusers, exploiters, and fascists use is to get you to waste time, energy, and other resources. Limited time, energy, and resources that could have a very great impact if used somewhere else. It's also a way of wearing people down.

Yes, it is very, very, very true that people do think that if you can't stand up to the likes of Chris Wallace, Fox, etc., you can't stand up to terrorists. But allowing Fox to manipulate you into wasting resources on a rigged playing field playing by their rules and designed to put you in a bad light is NOT standing up to Wallace, Fox, the Republican Party, or the far-right. It's also very, very, very true that people also think that if you're so stupid that you keep falling for the tactics of the far-right then you're too stupid to deal with terrorists.
