Saddam had no allies because, well, there were other sources of oil. Now that the US essentially controls 2 of those MidEast sources, I have serious doubts that Russia and China will allow the US to run roughshod over a third source that they have legal contracts with.

Is the ability to take it in the ass for six straight years, and going, from some people hiding in caves, plus the removal of an unarmed dictator of a defenseless country at the cost of everything we ever stood for, supposed to be some kind of an achievement you're actually proud of?
I must be an "anti-American" then because the same "achievements" that make you proud, make me ashamed to be an American.
As we "anti-Americans" always like to say, if you liked Iraq, you're gonna love Iran.

Excellent report, Bill. As always.
You don't seem to think Iran will welcome the US with candy and flowers.
I think it will lead to WWIII. Iran is not going to sit back and just take it. It will lash out and that attack may be on Israel. If that happens, you can kiss your ass goodbye.
I believe it was Albert Einstein who said that he didn't know what weapons WWIII would be fought with, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones.

Oh yes. It has been pointed out that the President has NOT said that Israel should be wiped off the map, and that he will not even be in charge of the bomb and that he will most probably lose the next election.
And that we are not even sure that there IS a bomb - the IAEA says there is not.
And that the US can not prevent Iran from getting the bomb if they so desires in the long run, and that a bombing of Iran will mean a tremendous blowback in the entire Middle East, and virtually shatter any likelihood of getting out of Iraq in one piece. Besides the Army is overstretched as is.

Nuke weapons has nothing to do with Junior itching to kill more innocent people.
The big question in the Iraq war was, "what was the hurry?" it turns out that the hurry was Junior became impatient. He couldn't even wait two months for the IAEA to come back and tell him there were no WMD's. Junior had to kill 1 million innocent children to find that out.

America Could Have Killed Usama bin Laden — But Didn't
By Col. David Hunt
The current “boneheads” in charge will tell you all day long that we are fighting and dying in Iraq and Afghanistan to stop terrorists there so they do not come here. Nice talk, how about — just for a moment — acting like you mean what you say? You know walk the walk. These incidents, where we displayed a total lack of guts, like the one in August, are just too prevalent. The United States of America’s political and military leadership has, on at least three separate occasions, chosen not capture or kill bin Laden or Ayman al-Zawahri. We have allowed Pakistan to become a safe haven for Al Qaeda. We have allowed Al Qaeda to reconstitute, partially because of money they (Al Qaeda in Iraq) have been sending to Al Qaeda in Pakistan.

Here's a partial - yet incredibly long - list of accomplishments against terrorism for which the Clinton Administration gets almost no credit or even recognition. President Clinton:
-- sent legislation to Congress to TIGHTEN AIRPORT SECURITY. (Remember, this is before 911) The legislation was defeated by the Republicans because of opposition from the airlines.
-- sent legislation to Congress to allow for BETTER TRACKING OF TERRORIST FUNDING. It was defeated by Republicans in the Senate because of opposition from banking interests.
-- sent legislation to Congress to add tagents to explosives, to allow for BETTER TRACKING OF EXPLOSIVES USED BY TERRORISTS. It was defeated by the Republicans because of opposition from the NRA.
When Republicans couldn't prevent executive action, President Clinton:
-- Developed the nation's first anti-terrorism policy, and appointed first national coordinator.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up 12 U.S. jetliners simultaneously.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up UN Headquarters.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up FBI Headquarters.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up the Israeli Embassy in Washington.
--Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up Boston airport.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up Lincoln and Holland Tunnels in NY.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up the George Washington Bridge.
-- Stopped cold the planned attack to blow up the US Embassy in Albania.
-- Tried to kill Osama bin Laden and disrupt Al Qaeda through preemptive strikes (efforts denounced by the G.O.P.).
-- Brought perpetrators of first World Trade Center bombing and CIA killings to justice.
-- Did not blame Bush I administration for first World Trade Center bombing even though it occurred 38 days after they had left office. Instead, worked hard, even obsessively -- and successfully -- to stop future terrorist attacks.
-- Named the Hart-Rudman commission to report on nature of terrorist threats and major steps to be taken to combat terrorism.
-- Tripled the budget of the FBI for counterterrorism and doubled overall funding for counterterrorism.
-- Detected and destroyed cells of Al Qaeda in over 20 countries
-- Created a national stockpile of drugs and vaccines including 40 million doses of smallpox vaccine.
-- Robert Oakley, Reagan Counterterrorism Czar says of Clinton's efforts "Overall, I give them very high marks" and "The only major criticism I have is the obsession with Osama"
-- Paul Bremer, Bush's Administrator of Iraq disagrees slightly with Robert Oakley saying he believed the Clinton Administration had "correctly focused on bin Laden. "
-- Barton Gellman of the Washington Post put it best, "By any measure available, Clinton left office having given greater priority to terrorism than any president before him" and was the "first administration to undertake a systematic anti-terrorist effort."

Here, in stark contrast, is part of the Bush-Cheney anti-terrorism record before September 11, 2001:
-- Backed off Clinton administration's anti-terrorism efforts.
-- Shelved the Hart-Rudman report.
-- Appointed new anti-terrorism task force under Dick Cheney. Group did not even meet before 9/11.
-- Called for cuts in anti-terrorism efforts by the Department of Defense.
-- Gave no priority to anti-terrorism efforts by Justice Department.
-- Ignored warnings from Sandy Berger, Louis Freeh, George Tenet, Paul Bremer, and Richard Clarke about the urgency of terrorist threats.
-- Halted Predator drone tracking of Osama bin Laden.
-- Did nothing in wake of August 6 C.I.A. report to president saying Al Qaeda attack by hijack of an airliner almost certain.
-- Bush - knowing about the terrorists' plans to attack in America, warned that terrorists were in flight schools in the US - took a four week vacation.
-- By failing to order any coordination of intelligence data, missed opportunity to stop the 9/11 plot as Clinton-Gore had stopped the millennium plots.
-- Blamed President Clinton for 9/11.

Israel knows how to take care of terrorist.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/

According to Israeli sources, preparations for the attack had been going on since late spring, when Meir Dagan, the head of Mossad, presented Olmert with evidence that Syria was seeking to buy a nuclear device from North Korea.
The Israeli spy chief apparently feared such a device could eventually be installed on North-Korean-made Scud-C missiles.
“This was supposed to be a devastating Syrian surprise for Israel,” said an Israeli source. “We’ve known for a long time that Syria has deadly chemical warheads on its Scuds, but Israel can’t live with a nuclear warhead.”
An expert on the Middle East, who has spoken to Israeli participants in the raid, told yesterday’s Washington Post that the timing of the raid on September 6 appeared to be linked to the arrival three days earlier of a ship carrying North Korean material labelled as cement but suspected of concealing nuclear equipment.

David Michael Green — "Imagine if an incompetent and insufficiently masculine boob like Al 'Sore Loserman' Gore or, gulp, French-speaking John Kerry had been at the helm these last years. Or Hillary! Ack! Talk about your scary scenarios. Things might have really gone awry. To begin with, a wimpy Democrat president probably wouldn't have paid any attention at all to the terrorism question during his or her first months in office, even if the alarm bells were going off like crazy that a big attack was planned. Probably a Hillary type would have been all obsessed about Iraq, instead, her cabinet refusing to even meet on the terrorism question until a week before 9/11. And even had they been warned in a Presidential Daily Briefing that the attack was imminent, these slouches would have been likely to have spent the month before 9/11 on vacation, as part of a wider and quite successful effort to set the all-time presidential record for most days spent screwing off (and that's only the officially acknowledged ones). And just as Bush and Cheney had once slogged their way through the mud and the jungles of Vietnam while Gore and Kerry were home hiding out and partying, no doubt the latter two would have been equally hard to find on 9/11. You could just imagine them flying off to - oh, I don't know, Nebraska! - in the face of national danger. Or sitting in a grade school classroom reading children's books. Or both. "

He took quite good care of it with the sanctions and the no fly zone.
The reason 9/11 happened was that the first George Bush set foot on Saudi Arabia - so says Osama Bin Laden.

“They don’t carry when they are off duty,” Gay said. “They go through a required check-in and check-out process.
“Therefore, he was on duty,” he added.

Terrorist organizations has been around as far back a the Reagan administration.
During the Clinton administration experts has stepped forward and warned the Republican controlled Congress that the terrorist organization have been getting more dangerous as the years went by because of the learning curve.
Do you know who the Republican controlled Congress listened to? Nutballs like Kristol and members of the PNAC that's who.
When Bush became President he put 11 of these PNAC nutballs on his staff and it's been screw up city ever since.

A drunk will deliberately start a fight just to come up use the fight as an excuse to go get drunk. This behaviour is epidemic in the Bush administration. If Europe goes along with the arm twisting the United States will say see even Europe agrees with us. If Europe doesn't go along with the arm twisting then the United States will use that as an excuse to attack Iran. It's damn if you do and damn if you don't. Israel is not even a Democratically created country in the first place. Israel is a state and you aren't even asking, "When is Palenstine?" meaning Israel's Constitution calls for a Jewish state. What this means is the Palenstinian People cannot become part of the political process otherwise you wouldn't have a Jewish state.

Asylum | 10.28.07 - 8:33 pm
After 9-11 we had a great deal of sympathy from the Iranians; but then Bush blew it with the "axis of evil" speech. The more moderate Khatami was replaced by Ahmadinejad who shares (de-facto) power with the hard line clerics. The people who live in the big cities are actually far more secular than those who live in many Sunni countries (see Moaveni's "Lipstick Jihad"); but they will be unified in the face of American agression. Iran has an ancient and well educated culture with the second largest Jewish community in the Muslim world. They also have a very powerful military which is right next door to Iranian influenced (Iran doing some major infrastructure work in Iraq) Iraq.

During the rule of the Shah many Iranians became secular and are quite modern. The country is divided very much like our country thanks to Bush.
The seculars have been making progress could possibly change the course of Iran if given time.
Many grassroot Iranians are just like many Americans. They see their country being ruled by screwballs just as we see our country being ruled by a cowboy wannabe with a few screws loose.

World Trade Center: Boom ***
In October 1995, the militant
Islamist and blind cleric Sheik Omar Abdel-Rahman, was sentenced to life imprisonment for masterminding the bombing. In 1998, Ramzi Yousef was convicted of "seditious conspiracy" to bomb the towers. In all, ten militant Islamist conspirators were convicted for their part in the bombing, each receiving prison sentences of at least 240 years.
Khobar Towers: Boom***
In Washington, officials launched investigations of the Khobar Towers incident specifically and military force protection policy in general. Within three days, Perry had chartered a retired Army officer, Gen. Wayne A. Downing, to do a fast, unvarnished review of the facts. In Congress, the House National Security Committee organized a fact-finding team and had it on the ground in Saudi Arabia within two weeks.
USS Cole: Boom*****
U.S. officials on Friday said they were looking at a number of militant groups in their probe of the attack on the Cole in the harbor at Aden, Yemen, and bin Laden's group, al-Qaeda, or "The Base," topped the list.
The United States accuses bin Laden of organizing a network with followers across the Middle East, including Yemen, and says he masterminded the embassy bombings.
Ali Mohamed, a former U.S. Army sergeant, pleaded guilty Friday to helping plot the embassy bombings, saying he joined bin Laden and others in a holy war to kill Americans anywhere they could be found. He was the first to plead guilty of the 17 key people indicted in the United States for the bombings.
Tanzanian embassy: Boom
Kenyan embassy: Boom****
The United States has indicted former Saudi millionaire Osama bin Laden for the 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, and he is on the FBI's list of the 10 most wanted suspected criminals.
All unresponded to (bombings of aspirin factories and empty campgrounds notwithstanding).

The People have no Power. This country is hijacked and it will take time to clean up Junior's mess. Bush trashed the unborn children of this nation by dumping a 4 trillion dollar I.O.U on them. I'll play you're game asylum, sure Israel has a right to exist.
Muddog | 10.28.07 - 8:43 pm
-------------
You know, "Israel has a right to exist" has been repeated so many times that it's become like a part of our very Constitution.
There is a reason behind that framing: It gives victim status to Israel. That helps turn a blind eye to Israeli terrorism and to the occupation of Palestinian lands. After all, if Israel is the victim, a victim must be given a right to defend itself, right?
That helps avoid asking the obvious corresponding question: Do the Palestinians have a right to their own State? Do the Palestinians have a right to try to defend their lands by trying to kill the invaders?
Now, suppose one day we do define what we mean by terrorism. If Israel qualifies as a state sponsor of terrorism, would you still say Israel still has a right to exist? And if they do don't other terror-sponsoring Muslim countries the right to exist?

I don't know if you are aware of this but many of the religious right prior to the sixties stayed out of politics.
It was the short lived sexual revolution of the sixties that brought the religious right out of woodworks and created such movements such as the Moral Majority and so on.
Nixon fueled the fire to this movement when he did his war on pornography speech. Reagan capitalized on the right and of course Bush wearing God on his sleeve exploited the gullible as well.

Christianity is organized religion, which I'll call The Church. The Church perverts The Good Book for its own nefarious reasons.
Christians --- true Christians, that is --- believe in love and peace. The Church has always believed in war.
Mind you, I don't have much respect for ANY organized religion. They are all pretty much the same, in my book (no pun intended). They ignore the teachings of the religion(s) in order to make people 'fall in line' with whatever meme-of-the-day supports their political/religious agenda.
Religious people: Good.
Religion: Bad.

In Naomi Klein's book, "The Shock Doctrine", the goal in Iraq was to create a shock to the people and install 'free market capitalism' while the Iraqis were in a shocked state. The real purpose oftorturing people had nothing to do with getting information, it is a tactic designed to terrorize the people into submission. It's message was, "resist us and yoou could be a torture victim along with those people we made examples of. Torture is an ineffective way to get reliable info according to most intelligence people but is a way to terrify the population into allowing a foreign nation to rape all the resources.

Here is part of what the head of the UN nuclear watchdog had to say. From my link at 10:44pm:
"We have information that there has been maybe some studies about possible weaponization," said Mohamed ElBaradei, who leads the International Atomic Energy Agency. "That's why we have said that we cannot give Iran a pass right now, because there is still a lot of question marks.
"But have we seen Iran having the nuclear material that can readily be used into a weapon? No. Have we seen an active weaponization program? No."

For instance, today I was debating with a co-worker that is a liberal and we were discussing rich, middle class and poor people for some time. We disagreed at the onset of the convo, but by the end after we allowed each other to make our points and express why we feel such a way then we had a clear understanding of where each of us came from and why we choose each side. Why did that happen? Because, unlike this site, we gave and received mutual respect on our positions and didn't just assume that we were each wrong because he took a position that I differed from and vice versa. The war pig crazies are now driving us into a super catastrophe with Iran using the claim of a nuclear Iran cannot be allowed. Why? Any use nukes by Iran would immedietely be countered by both our and Israel's vast nuke arsenal, resulting in immediate vaporization of Iran. Provoking Iran into another unecessary war would have far greater consequences for the US and might draw all the world's powers into conflict. I just gotta know . . . if Shrub actually does attack Iran, will belongsinanAsylum, Herbie the dumb Bug, Boob Douglas, Truthiness the Anti-thinker, cattleProd AmericaKKKan, and the rest of the assorted sockpuppets actually join into this war they so desperately want?
Somehow, I don't think so . . .
One other thing - the chickenwingnuts keep saying Iran will not be allowed to have nuclear weapons . . . um, we have them, lots of 'em . . . so what gives us the authority to decide who else can or can't have them?
Reminds me of the lines of Robert Frost:
"Having invented a new Holocaust,
And been the first with it to win a war,
How they make haste to cry with fingers crossed,
King's X-no fairs to use it any more!"

THANKS MJ FOR THE ABOVE.
I'm with you when it comes to nukes.
Where is it written than ONLY the United States and Israel are allowed to be armed to the teeth with nuclear weapons? Are WE and ISRAEL to be trusted? I don't think so. Look what we did by invading occupying Iraq.
And look what ISRAEL did to Lebaonon.
If the criteria for owning nukes is that the country that has them are peace lovers, the United States and Israel have failed miserably.

On Tuesday in Iraq's Anbar Province, where jihadi fighters once enjoyed sanctuary, Sunni Arabs turned out en masse to commemorate Sheikh Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, a leader suspected of having been killed for helping the US rout Al Qaeda from the province. He was hailed as a "martyr."
In Lebanon last month, the efforts of Al Qaeda-inspired guerrillas to take over a Palestinian refugee camp were crushed. And in his latest audiotape, Osama bin Laden adopted a rare contrite tone, admitting "mistakes" by some Al Qaeda militants in Iraq.
Across the Arab world, where Al Qaeda had sought to build influence and bases of operation on the back of widespread anger against the US over its war in Iraq and the broader war on terrorism, the movement is now showing signs that it is stalled, if not in retreat.
Experts say Al Qaeda's failures have largely come down to its brutal methods, which have turned off large numbers of Arabs. They say that Muslims from Iraq to Egypt may want their countries to adhere to strict Islamic law, but not at the price of suicide bombings.
This is not to say that the group is vanishing or unable to carry out attacks.
But even the US, which not long ago was warning that a withdrawal from Iraq could leave Al Qaeda with control of the Sunni-dominated Anbar Province from which to threaten US and regional interests, is now declaring the local movement a spent force.
"In Fallujah, Ramadi, and other parts of Anbar ... Al Qaeda simply is gone," the American ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, told reporters in Baghdad on Thursday. In Baghdad, he said Al Qaeda is on the ropes "but still present … Sunni militias are increasingly going out of the militia business and coming over to say we want to hook up with the coalition and indeed with the government of Iraq."
The Brookings Institution's Iraq index, which monitors security indicators in the country, appears to back up Mr. Crocker's assessment. In its latest report, the index found that the flow of foreign fighters to Iraq has dropped from about 85 to about 50 over several recent months. US officials say the number of suicide bombings in Iraq has fallen from more than 60 in January to about 30 a month since July

The new counterinsurgency approach - namely, to take territory from al Qaeda, hold it, secure it and empower tribal sheiks to work together and rebuild their communities - finally provides an effective "counteroffensive" to the chief tactics of al Qaeda militants and Shiite death squads.
America's enemies in Iraq, radical insurgents living and fighting among the general public, understand that they can't continue their fight without capitulation from ordinary Iraqis. Finally, after almost four years, the U.S. military understands this as well.
Whereas we used to emphasize overwhelming firepower (even when I was there in 2006), we now emphasize firepower as a last resort. Whereas we used to rush to the scene after the violence occurs, we're now there to repel it or deter it altogether.
This commitment - up and down the chain of command - has made a major impact on the tit-for-tat death toll that was threatening to tear the country apart. Sectarian violence has been severely curtailed.
Since last December, sectarian deaths throughout Iraq have dropped over 50 percent; overall attacks against civilians are down 50 percent. In Baghdad - the focal point of Petraeus' strategy - sectarian deaths are down almost 80 percent in 10 months and large al Qaeda-style truck and suicide bombings have dropped over 50 percent.
Moreover, ordinary Iraqis are providing far more tips and other information. We now get some 23,000 tips a month, four to five times the level of a year before. This measure - which directly correlates to the trust and support of the population - is promising.
These are significant and consequential numbers and indicate real successes in stomping out the civil war. But it's not just numbers that make the case that the civil war is ending. Look, too, at what the new strategy lets commanders do in their now-daily discussions with ordinary Iraqis.
Petraeus reports that foreign (non-Iraqi) recruits conduct over 80 percent of al Qaeda's attacks; and therefore, by refocusing local tribal leaders on this fact, American commanders are making a convincing argument to the sheiks: Why launch an indiscriminate reprisal against another sect, ratcheting up the level of violence, when you can simply tell us and Iraqi security forces where the foreign insurgents are and we'll go get them? The numbers say that's exactly what's happening.
A people drowning in sectarian violence and warped by perpetual vengeance aren't going to immediately engage in political reconciliation. Security improvements must first dampen the violence, lower tensions and restore humanity. This is exactly what Petraeus has done, and we have finally begun providing the tangible security improvements necessary for lasting political solutions at the local and national levels.
Although many hope to convince America otherwise, the Iraq war has fundamentally changed in '07. It's not a civil war anymore. It's the people of Iraq vs. al Qaeda and Iranian proxies, with the U.S.-led Coalition helping the Iraqi people swing their sword of sovereignty.
The truth shall set you free Bill. Maybe if you had ever served in the military you would not have such hatred of them.

THIS IS HOW FOX NEWS HOPES TO GET US INTO WAR WITH IRAN:
U.S. Military: Iranian-Made Rockets Hit Base Near Baghdad
http://www.foxnews.com/story/
0,2...,305686,00.html
Rockets fired at a U.S. base southeast of Baghdad were manufactured in Iran, showing again that country’s continued logistical support for insurgents inside Iraq, U.S. military officials said on Saturday.
Comment: Far be it from me to say the U.S.military is lying, but is there any independent reporting showing they were actually Iranian rockets?
Remember Abu Ghraib. The U.S. military tried a giant cover-up of that scandal.
FOX NEWS HAS TAKEN THIS STORY AND RUN WITH IT NIGHT AND DAY ON THEIR TV SHOWS. FOX NEWS DOES NOTHING WITHOUT THE TACIT APPROVAL OF THE BUSH WHITE HOUSE.
The Bush administration wants any excuse at all to go to war with IRAN without consulting Congress or the UN.

I normally don't bother answering trolls who cut and paste Republican "talking points," but JUAN needs to have his ears pinned back.
He claim the surge is working, but he failed to mention how the General was wounded yesterday while riding in a Humvee and the only protection he had came from a PRIVATE security firm, not the U.S. military.
JUAN also failed to mention 27 Iraqi recruits were killed Monday when a suicide bomber wheeled up on bicycle and blew himself up.
JUAN also failed to mention 20 decpatitaed bodies were found in Baghad Monday, the seat of where the "surge" is supposed to be working like a charm.
And finally JUAN posed this question to me:
"The truth shall set you free Bill. Maybe if you had ever served in the military you would not have such hatred of them."
Juan | 10.29.07 - 8:39 am | #
JUAN it may interst you to know I did serve in the military. I was a combat engineer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. What about you? Have you been in the military and what branch?
Last week I scared off KRE, who claimed he was in the military, when I asked him some basic questions that anyone who ever served in the military should know. He "cut and ran" because he couldn't answer even one question that any recruit would be able to answer after just ONE WEEK in the military.
It is always fun to trip up someone who pretends they were in the military. It is like taking candy from a baby.
SO JUAN. WHAT BRANCH OF THE SERVICE WERE YOU IN? WHAT WAS YOUR RANK? WHAT WAS YOUR MOS?
AND FINALLY, JUAN, WHAT DOES IT MEAN WHEN THEY TIE A TOWEL TO THE END OF YOUR BUNK WHEN YOU ARE GOING THROUGH BASIC OR BOOT?
