How? Appears the employer aided the Mexican to 'illegally' re-enter and walk across the border. The Mexican didn't RUN across the border and jump the fence; hence the problem is with crooked employers, and hence, you follow the money with the lawsuit!

So it also appears politicians have laws in place so that victims' families can be monetarily compensated in these cases.

Illegal immigrants committed a crime, in the first place when they entered America illegally? legal people in this nation know that their own commit criminal acts, but if their were not an estimated 38 million illegal aliens in our country today, many cramming our prison system. Joslyn Johnson, the widow of a cop murdered by an illegal immigrant, and her attorney; they are suing the accused's American employer.

Good for them! If the employer somehow stupidly assisted Quintero in getting back into the country AFTER he was deported for a previous crime, then the employer deserves to be sued. I hope Mrs. Johnson and her attorney are successful.

The term guest worker program sounds like something from one of those ridiculous focus group studies, on what can we call this so the wealthy can keep their cheap labor, while hoping the haters aren't paying attention.

I'll do my best to try to stay on topic of illegal immigrants. I believe it a serious issue, but don't claim to have the definitive answer. Let me preface by referring to the official 9/11 Commission report. It just Erkel's my Stevies that this administration has not complied or much furthered any of their primary 'do it now' findings. With regard to in country initiatives. Has security been enhanced at chemical or power plants? Find the recommendations here: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/911/pdf.../ fullreport.pdf Border control has not been sufficiently addressed. There are current laws in place that are not being enforced. Corporate agri-business (farm laborers) and meat/poultry packing industry are the major scofflaws. Certainly, it wouldn't be difficult for ICE to civilly conduct a 'catch & deport/release program. At least get some documentation/stats of who is where. I was a proponent of issuing driver licenses because there would be a record on file. I have plenty more thoughts and concerns on this issue, but choose not to ramble on this post. off topic may fit the bill. just saying.

An immigrant is someone like my wife who came here legally with support and education and a willingness to better herself and follow the law.

Illegal aliens are criminals under US Law and are the single most likely group to commit: Rape, assault, DWI, theft, ID theft & fraud. Illegal aliens are also the most likely group to be the residents of jails and prisons in the US.

The cost per prison I believe, is always misleading.

If you have a population of say 1000 prisoners and it costs $1,000,000 for those prisoners, the costs of running that prison will not go down by $1,000 since you're still going to be heating, paying for guards etc etc, at the same amount regardless of whether you've got 999 or 1000. (example) Granted the cost of feeding and clothing said prisoner will be eliminated, but lighting in the cafeteria will remain unchanged.

I happened to catch some of Mouth of Mencia last night and he said something very funny but also very true. It will be a sad day if Mexicans STOPPED coming over the boarder looking for work here, because then it would mean things were better in Mexico than they are here in the US.

And that's the point that I feel so many overlook. This is a great country, if it wasn't why would people not risk life and limb to get here so they can pick lettuce in the blazing sun? Personally, I couldn't care less about Manuel coming over here to wash dishes or cut my lawn.

I would agree that it is unfair to paint all those that come here as hardened criminals but to ignore the fact that many come here to commit and further their criminal activities is dangerously naive. I don't know your story ands really don't care I do know that there is a Cop's widow in Houston that has to deal with a completely unnecessary tragedy committed by an absolute scumbag and child molester who had been deported once but couldn't resist an open border and lax criminal prosecution both hallmarks of liberal border policies. The same policies that constantly want to confuse legal immigration with the anarchy of uncontrolled illegal border crossings. Only grown-ups who can take the emotion and misrepresentations out of the argument will be able to solve this problem and not the rantings of the left and right.

Ed, the overwhelming number of immigrants come to this countryfor a better life and for the escape from either US initiated terror which occurred in Central America in the 80's like in Guatamala, Nicaragua, and El Salvador, or for the neoliberal "free market policies" that have accelerated the economic destruction of their economies through subsidized imported crops or cash export crops which are overwhelmingly controlled by multinational corporate agribusiness. Ever wonder why you can buy a seemingly infinite variety of world grown coffees while there is starvation in these same countries? The vast majority of immigrants are hardworking, honest people. I know this. I've taught their kids in public high school for over 25 years.
