McCain tries to be all things to all people.
First thing he did after sewing up the nomination was to visit New Orleans and other economically depressed areas and promise unspecified 'help.' Then he made a speech on his 'revolutionary' new health care proposal, which as it turns out mostly involves helping employers get out from under providing health care while doing practically nothing to help people get coverage. But then he went to a group of conservatives and promised to appoint Supreme Court justices like John Roberts. So now he is suddenly an environmentalist.
I once wrote that John McCain would say he was a squid if he thought it would help him get elected.
