One surprisingly good experience at the big orange box: custom carpet install.
I had heard an ad on the radio for another shop and went in, got all excited, walked home with tons of samples but was freaked about dropping so much dough. My sweetie went to the Home Despot and found the same styles and quality for less, free pad and 10% off installation durin a Memoial Day sale. Worked for me. Best yet, because i was such a slacker to pay, they kept calling to see if i really wanted the rooms carpeted, and towards the end of the promotion, threw in a $300 area rug for free. All around, pretty darn good. 2 bedrooms, hallway and stairwell + 3 landings carpeted for under $1,000 (in a small victorian) plus free new living room area rug = happy Annie 
Annie, thanks for stopping by. I'm glad to hear that you had a good experience with HD, and I'll keep that in mind if I need carpet in the future!
