I think that fiddle/violin and the lap steel guitar have been creeping into popular music since the mid-80s. I'm not popular with Rucker's current stuff, so it could very well be more appropriate for the C&W crowd, I'm just saying that I hear a lot of "experimentation" in modern music -- especially with the lap steel.
