Gravatar Oh man... this is funny. I showed my daughter the art of "JUNE-BUG" flying this past weekend, she was amazed. Thanks for bringing back the good memories.

Gravatar Your illustration is awesome! We used to do that with june bugs when we were kids. We also used to catch yellow jackets in jars, refrigerate them for 5 minutes to make them fall asleep, and put them on strings. Each of us would get about 5 bees on strings and have bee wars.

Gravatar I remember the good ol' days. My mom also use to do that for me as a kid. I was soooo fascinated with this. When my kids were young i would do it for them too, and just to make memories I sometimes will catch one and tie a thread to it and give it to my daughter now and she just smiles and ties the string to her finger. It makes for wonderful memories.

Gravatar hey, thanks everyone. I'm getting bad about respoding back to everyone's comments.

Jimbo- Hey buddy! long time no type. I checked out your blog. Great, great stuff.

georg- yep, this bug is green and shiny. I don't think it plays in the poop like your sweedish bug... if so, I better go wash my hands!

Lou- Only a few illustrations on my site are actual 'paid' editorial work. Most on there are for illustration friday. I'm feverishly working to remedy that!

Gravatar We use to do it with roaches, growing up in NYC.
I just bookmarked your website. Great work. Coincidentally I just posted a fly sketch on my blog. Although, not as cool or reminiscent as yours.

By the way, are those illos on your website editorial?

Gravatar Beautiful image, especially the bug - I don't know quite, what a junebug is. Is it black & green and shining? In Denmark we have a big bug like that, a "skarnbasse", in english "big one in the shit", because it is in the shit, mostly shit of cows.
How do you avoid breaking its legs?

Gravatar oh wonderful Brandon, your bug is beautiful!! love him, the swirl and the bug eyed blue hair girl, ha, her expression so fun!

Gravatar this is adorable! i love the colors (especially her blue hair). i did not do this as a kid, but we certainly had our share of june bugs. i was a champion lightning bug catcher though!

Gravatar Sounds like a neat idea, but how do you suspend the willies long enough to get the rope around its leg?

Gravatar Great story, Brandon (aren't moms great sometimes?). Everything looks great in this piece. Nice job!

Gravatar That is news to me but very interesting. We didn't get a lot of june bugs where I grew up. I love the illustration. Really fantastic work.

Gravatar Hi Brandon!
nice illo!
I remember Junebugs, but I never did do the string thing.
I remember my brother tying strings around dragonflies though.

hope you're doing well!
j.

Gravatar I've never heard of this bug.
maybe another name in here,Korea.

i remember i did same to dragonfly.

anyway, good warm illustration.

Gravatar We didn't HAVE Junebugs where I grew up. Here in Texas, though, we might be able to use them as an alternate power source for helicopters... IF we could make them fly in formation.

Gravatar Nice Illo!My brothers' entry (#347)is on the same topic.I had also wondered how many others did this as a kid.

Gravatar Awesome swirling action!
I missed out as a kid. I've never heard of this game.

Gravatar Ha,ha! I love this!!!

Gravatar Awesome! I love the style and the composition.

Gravatar lovely illo!
