Hi Jake
I've been reading your blog for about a year now, but never commented before.
I just wanted to congratulate you on your engagement. I'm very happy for you
Unfortunatly, you live in a contry with stupid laws regarding gay marriage, but if you ever want to come to Denmark and get married legally, let me know. I'll be more than happy to help you out

Congratulations again!
One question though concerning a Disney wedding: is Mickey going to be doing the ceremony? How does that work?
And again a great compliment for mixing the personal and political in such a spellbinding manner.
Thanks!

That story was just about the best way to start my morning.
When do we get to see a PICTURE of your soon-to-be-spouse??

'Sondheim songs we ... said we should have sung at our wedding.'
I do hope the reception includes a rousing group number of 'God That's Good!'
Have! You! Ever! Tasted! Such! A! Wonder! God! That! Cake's! Good!

Wonderfully written Jake, humorous, poignant and still full of romance.
If you can't make it to Lea's for a Danish marriage (very romantic) we Canadians would be honoured to assist you. A wedding in Quebec City would be very romantic or perhaps a rustic cabin in the resort town Whistler.

Congratulations.
I'm happily partnered with my bf of many years -- we made a commitment to each other and we are each other's partner in all aspects of life.
Sometime I'll have to understand why gays want 'marriage' so much but still publically look for others to share carnal pleasures -- with their partners and outside their relationships? Seems to me that isn't what marriage is -- I'm not puritanical, and not dead to other attractive men/couples -- but my partner gets all of me.
So, sign me up for equal rights for all --- gay/str8, any race, any ethnicity... but pushing so hard for 'marriage' isn't assuring equal rights.

First of all, I caught and loved the Little Red Ridinghood reference
Congrats, again. Tim and I celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary on May 31st. Can't believe time's gone so fast.
My only thought for is that you reconsider doing the Disney wedding. We had about 130 guests at our wedding, the majority of them straight. In the time soon after the wedding, so very many of them told us how much attending our ceremony affected their thoughts on gay rights and stuff. With all you said about our political climate right now, this is one thing you can do to help. Certainly here in Oklahoma City, but also in Chicago. Let your big circle of life experience it, legal or not. For those who attend, it will be real. It helps.
Please forgive my little sermon. Can't help it. And all best wishes to you and your betrothed!

Great story...and very romantic - especially the part where you threaten to punch him in the balls! Too funny.

My many "congrats" to you, Jake. This is a 'good thing' to quote Martha. Plus you've helped me open the waterworks here in the office. I have my reasons for a good cry.
Blessings to you both; my every good wish for your Disney hitch!

The "Into the Woods" reference was my favorite part of the post.
And if you think I believe that all you did after the proposal was "talk and laugh and kiss" you've got another think coming.

You ARE all of those things, and you are deserving of the same rights, privileges and responsibilities the rest of us enjoy. I am right next to you in championing gay marriage, straight though I may be. Marriage - ANY marriage - is hard, soul-fulfilling work. Good marriages are lights in the Universe and lord knows we need more light.
Congratulations, my friend. I wish you every happiness.

Congratulations Jake! I've been reading this blog since before I started my own (that's some time over two years) and this is indeed the best news you've ever posted here.
Honestly, I think marriage has little to do with the legal papers. It is about the shared feelings, commitment and support, and you guys already have all of that. Now that you're also planning to have a glamorous party with your friends and loved ones, I doubt there anything important missing.
As for the cake...Could you send some over to this corner of the EU? :P

Yay! for you both.
Do the ceremony in the U.S. and then do it legally in Canada. You'll get a rush when signing official government documents.

If you really want friends and family to attend your wedding celebration rethink your idea of a "destination wedding" in Disneyland. Not everyone has the time, money and inclination for making the trip from Chicago and Iowa to Orlando for somebody else's convenience. Weddings are properly celebrated in the home town of the bride, and since you are both in Chicago, that would seem to be the best venue for your celebration. Or go to Massachusetts or Toronto for a legal wedding, unfortunately not recognized in Illinois. Or CT, VT, NJ for civil union. And, of course, Orlando for the honeymoon.

glad you didn't have to punch him in the balls, it would have ruined the moment a bit. Thanks for sharing the how you did it! Disney isn't that terribly expensive. Keep me posted!

Jake,
In looking up ideas of gay proposals I came across your blog and this particular entry. I think it was the exact thing I was looking for...your writing is incredible, with every word I felt the emotions - most of all the bits of comedy, and my favorite "Woods" quote...after reading this entry I found myself curious of others and began to read...what a great blog you have put together and all your passion, love and commitment is very inspiring.
I would like to discuss with you some questions I had re: your engagement process/plans on the ceremony...if you had some time and were willing to talk - please drop me a line.
