Lois, this is an excellent tribute. I clicked that link, and I had no idea that was the final resting place of so many. That is just horrible to contemplate and I know the families must hate what has (or has not) happened.
The part about the axe is chilling, but just one of many similar stories I have heard about that day and the aftermath. I hope that Bobby's family and many others will have their hopes for a proper burial answered soon.

I clicked that link first off Lois.... how sad! The axe story was so beautiful. These things truly happen, our deceased loved ones reach out to us in so many ways.
No, I'm not sick of hearing about 9-11. I don't think we should ever forget.

I knew that's where the debris and remains ended up, but I had no idea the rest of the country didn't. It's common knowledge in NYC. The debris was sifted through for months, but I know that's no comfort for the families who have no remains to bury.
FYI, although "Fresh Kill" sounds horrific, "kill" is actually a Dutch word for "stream" or "creek." New York is full of things named "kill".

dunno if you had read or heard, but apparently when insurance claims adjusters were searching through the damaged duetche bank building last year (which was condemmned immediately after the attacks and seldom been entered by people since), they found mumified remains of some of the victims who were in the towers whose bodies were literally blown out of the buildings by the force of rushing air as the towers collapsed. they also found a significant number of bone fragments and other body parts on the roof of the building, and have begun searching the rooftops of other buildings in the lower manhattan area for human remains.
i don't think there ever will be total peace for the remains of the victims of that day. quite lame.

I was very shocked about that landfill. How does that happen? These stories need to be told, but I will be weepy and depressed for days.

This brought tears to my eyes. I cannot imagine not having not having something to bury, to have the closure that brings. (yes, I clicked the link)

That is awful; the debris could easily have been put into a hole with a memorial insription on it.

Today my son was given an assignment to do a story on a person lost on 9/11. We have had the pleasure knowing the Foti family through hockey for years (Erie, PA)- thus my son doing the project on Robert. In searching the internet - we came across this story. I
will make every effort to pass this story and petition on to everyone on my mailing list. I think the cause could not be a greater one! Donna Erie, PA

What a timely reminder that while we may all go back to work or whatever we do, still five years later, families are still waiting for closure. Thanks Lois.

I grew up in the Lower East Side, went to school with the Foti's at St. Joseph's Catholic School. We all belonged to St. Mary's parish on Grand St. Joseph is an old friend of mine. I was devastated to hear of Robert! Thank you for this tribute.
