Not really an either/or situation. I cover local events, but only those I FEEL like covering-- though sometimes I cover what our daily rag does not.
On the other hand, the NYTimes is doing a series on water pollution which surely is taking far more money and resources than nearly any blog could muster.
Glad to have both blogs and (at least some) good traditional journalism, printed on paper as well as online.
