When using the default setup, KinoSearch's indexes are big because in addition to the index-part-of-the-index they contain full copies of the original text to aid in highlighting of excerpts. If you don't need excerpts, you can turn that off on a per-field basis. You can also turn on zlib compression per-field and get some significant shrinkage that way.
Full texts are stored by default because disk space is cheap and I wanted it to be easy to use the highlighting.

Hi Marvin, thanks for the tip!
I actually played around a bit more with KinoSearch during the rest of my vacation and I must say I'm completely sold on it. I will definitely use it for my site and the space it occupies with the index is more than justified given the performance I can get out of it.
