I also loved control. But, although I agree with the strong influence of the B&W images, I had the feeling that the film modifies each perspective one may have in relation to Ian's life: After all he's not that mad druged Rock-star we imagine he was. Right?

But more seriously, I don't have a very clear picture of what Ian's life was like, I was too young back then to actively follow it, but I do have the feeling he was not a drug-crazed rock-star at all.
His songs and lyrics were deeply felt and he was profoundly unhappy with his life, that much I already knew. The film gave off that very feeling so as far as I know it is quite faithful to life (or at least to the spirit of it).
Then again, like I said, I was too young back then, so I may be completely wrong about that.
