Sounds like some people need to practice their mean mug or their crazy look. Those who have watched the movie I'm Gonna Git You Sucka know how to pull off the crazy look.

This sucks, but unfortunately is a common occurence. My ex was mugged in a similar fashion in 2007 after leaving the train station at 145th. When leaving the subway, never have your ipod, iphone, zune, zen or whatever on, in your ears or otherwise announcing to the world that you are not aware of what's going on. At any time of the day. Period.

Certainly getting mugged sucks and should not happen anywhere. But while an area is "getting better", it certainly does not certify it as being an area unable to get mugged in. And as well any "safe" area will have wanderers looking for easy pickings.
Absolutely the history of an area should be taken into consideration before moving there.
Think of it this way... when traveling to areas of other cultures, one should realized they are out of their environment and blend in.

Good to know it was a petite Asian man.
I'm a petite white man, so I can be confident it would never happen to me.
While we're identifying races, can you say what race the assailants were?

two things. I received an email from someone who identified himself as the victim. He tells me the mugging occurred on 144th, not 145th st as I noted.
and no, i cant tell you the race of the assailants, not that it matters.
"To which the officer noted, "No. And unfortunately, this tends to happen a lot, and often they will pick on people who look like they don't live in the neighborhood."
The victim, a petite Asian man, replied that he has lived here for ten years."

I have lived in Hamilton Heights for more than a year now and have never had any problems at the 145th Street Station (::knock on wood: .

I lived on Edgecombe in Hamilton Heights/Sugar Hill (at 145th) for 5 years from 2001-2006. I'm a young white woman, yet never felt it was partcularly dangerous. I am surprised to hear that muggings are very common in this neighborhood because I never had problems. However side streets south of 145 and the blocks closer to Broadway are considerably sketchier. I wonder if muggings are more common now that the neighborhood is gentrifying -- it was not when I moved in.

Hey Paolo - where on 144? I live on 144 between Broadway & Amsterdam. It's a very busy street until pretty late, but primarily with parents/kids and not sketchy types.

Gwin, originally the mugging, as best as I recall as I was standing right there when it was reported, occurred on 145th, btw Convent and Amsterdam. But according the the email I received, it happened on 144th btw Convent and Amsterdam.
I too was surprised this took place where it did, for the same reasons you noted.
With that said, appearances are subjective and open to stereotype and bias.

Oddly enough, I read this blog post when it was first posted.
Needless to say, it slipped my mind since, until I was mugged, same fashion on election night at 8PM on 147th, walking from St. Nick to Convent.
Really sucked. Thanks for posting this.

It has been requested that I add a little more information about my experience so here it is:
It was around 8PM, and I was walking from the 145th ABCD stop on 147th from St. Nick to Convent. I was caught up in election excitement and was getting live updates from a friend of mine, on, you guessed it, my iphone.
Essentially, I was walking, and a guy was rushing up the street yelling. At first, I ignored him, thinking it was NY as usual, until he put a gun on my back and yanked the phone and took off running down 147th to St. Nick. Luckily (I guess), the cops were driving up the street at the time and witnessed the before, during and after of my mugging--but due to a broken radio, were unable to catch the guys (turns out one of them was waiting behind for a lookout/assistance if needed). Had the cops not been there, it probably would have been a much worse outcome--I still have my wallet, well being, and bottle of champagne.
Needless to say, I was a little shaken--especially given the guy would still go ahead with mugging me with a cop RIGHT THERE (the cops said they hesitated when they saw the police car driving up the street but then went for it anyway). Also to be noted were the people hanging out on their stoops that did not raise a finger to help.
I filed a report with the police, although had to encourage them to do so (asked, when discovered it was just my phone taken, "You don't really want to file a report, right?") . Looks like these guys are still at it. Be careful up there.

Gwin, are you kidding? 144th street between Amsterdamn and Broadway is basically an open air crack market.

I'm not kidding... but then again, I've only been living here 3 months. If I see anything different, I'll be sure to let you know.
