Hi Amy,
As far as who to follow on Twitter, I've had some success using IM alerts (what Twitter calls 'track') on my keywords of interest. Then when someone's Tweet, passed to me via the track (alert), reads particularly interesting, I check out their other recent updates, web site, and make a decision if I want to Follow.
It's (following and being followed) an emergence thing again...not something that can be figured out in advance of jumping in to give it a try.

Thanks for the tip, Ray. It makes a lot of sense.
referring back to your "early adopter.. or am I?" theme that I love, I attended a party on Saturday where I announced I "finally" joined Twitter and no one else in the room had even heard of it!
