Very interesting post. I've heard from Saudis about all these things that happen in the country, but I guess it's kept carefully hidden. It's hard to believe so many Saudis engage in pre-marital sex or that many Saudi girls have multiple boyfriends (according to Saudis I've spoken to).
Saria- I don't know about it being carefully hidden. With the very bold men roaming the streets looking for girls..and the flirty girls responding to their advances and enjoying it. As well as the use of video which goes from phone to phone of actual sex between a saudi guy and a saudi girl/woman. So I don't understand why people insist on putting their heads in the sand as if it isn't there.
Nzingha, is it that they can't bear the idea of punishing a man for a sex-related crime without finding a way to punish a woman too? It's got to be a woman's fault, somehow, right? You just have to keep looking till you find her?

The guy was so sure of himself. Am glad he's being punished but don't understand why the reporters are getting attention for this. I have heard alot about saudi men who harass women and some women who enjoy them. It's so sad that they are playing the blame game when this is so getting out of hand. They chase anyone in an *abbaya*. Some of these women are old enough to be their mothers/grandmothers and they don't care, so long as its a woman.
It's really interesting to me as an American with absolutely no experience with the Middle East other than what I read on the internet/in books and what we see on TV that women are allowed to be harrassed in that way in Saudi. Here, if a man were to follow me and make lewd advances, I could have him arrested. I wear the clothes I'm comfortable in and show quite a bit more skin than a woman in an abaya, because men over here are expected to control themselves and not behave like sex-crazed animals.
You see this same attitude in the extremely conservative Christian circles-- women need to be the ones to cover up because men just can't control themselves, and if a man is lusting after a woman it's the woman's fault, not the man's. I'm not criticising women who choose to cover, I'm criticising men who say that women HAVE to cover because they can't control themselves otherwise. Dispicable.
You can't legislate morality, and claiming to be a Christian or a Muslim doesn't mean diddly if you don't practice what you preach. If men are so concerned about sexual purity and morality, then treat women with respect and DON'T LOOK if there's a woman dressed in a way that gets you going. My brothers were always taught to avert their eyes and look at the ground, because they were told that they couldn't control how other people behaved, but they can control how they respond.
Can you tell that this one gets me ticked off? LOL.
Lindsay- There are a lot of issues here and I'll probably respond just with a blog entry because it will be more like an informed rant lol.. mental note to get it done have title in my head already
sf- from what I read many are being charged, not just this one woman. The camera man was charged he pled guilty and received jail time and lashes WTH??
