surprised by the negative reviews. i'm liking it a lot. while r.a. at times needs an editor, both jacksonville city nights and 29 are some of his best work. the instrumentation is sparse on this one, but the melodies are still there, and each song has a narrative (as opposed to just being catchy). i think this is a concept album... but don't let that scare you off. good stuff... thanks for the stream.

this is a very good release for ryan, brings him back at the same level he came releasing heartbreaker.
Different style, different ryan, but same breathtaking songs, i like it a lot.

I DIG THIS. I wasn't so into his past few albums. In fact, I'd liked each less than the one before it. This, however has to be my favorite Ryan Adams album yet. By yet I mean EVER.
I think the extreme negative and positive comments speak to the breadth of styles he molds himself into. While I may prefer one Ryan over another, you will prefer different ones.
Thanks for streaming it - another example of online content leading to real worl album sales. I'm pre-ordering this ASAP.

When I first listened to this, I was pretty unimpressed. But it finally got to me after the fourth listen thru. I quit thinking about the easy Grateful Dead comparison, I quit trying to compare it to every other record he's done (even this year), and I just listened to it. It clicked.
The songwriting is excellent, it's alternately lush and rocked out, it's honest, and very enjoyable. Is it my favorite Ryan Adams record? No. But I gotta say, even his "worst songs" are better than many of the so-called "best songs" I've heard from so many others. Ryan is, and always has been, a chameleon -- strikingly adaptive, frequently derivative, but always tasteful. These are qualities possessed only of the greatest performers in the world.
For those who complain of him being too derivative, I say this: anything that is ultimately listenable and enjoyable must be, in some way, derivative in some way or another. There's no new magic invention under the sun cranking out entirely original AND listenable music. Sorry. When that comes along, let me know.
This is the year Ryan has returned to solid form, and I'm proud to have been able to share this stream with everyone. It has translated into record sales for the artist, that makes me happiest of all.
If you didn't like it, oh well. But I predict that some people who said they didn't like it at first will come back later and talk about how much its grown on them.

I'm impressed. He actually pulled off the trifecta without a clunker in the bunch. I'm sure this won't please everyone, (I'm partial to Jacksonville myself) but the man certainly seems to have found his groove.

Minus the monstrosity that is "The Sadness" and the general "eh" feeling I get from "29", I enjoyed it. It reminds me a little of "Love is Hell", which I loved.
Either way, the thing that struck me about this album is how much it sounds like Ryan Adams. That may sound like a profoundly unprofound statement, but when I listen to this, I don't hear the influences so blatently. I hear what sounds like him and only him.
So good on him for that...

Okay - I thought Cold Roses emulated the beautiful warm sounds of the Dead, but OMG - his first song is Truckin......how long will it take Weir and Co. to sue?
Other than that, it's definitely a pretty record. But that still won't get me to pay for another Ryan Adams concert.

Blue Sky Blues is worth more as a song than the very lives of anyone who would write ANYTHING negative about this CD. One of the greatest songs EVER WRITTEN. Write a song 1/100th as good as that and then get back to me with your criticisms.

This is my favorite CD Ryan's ever released. I've listened to it about ten times now, and while the title track didn't impress me, the rest of the album is deep and beautiful. I have every one of his albums and I definitely plan on buying this one too. It's just amazing. If you're complaining about him being influenced by other artists, that's not very impressive. All artists have influences, and if you weren't so critical, you'd notice your favorite artists also have influences. Get your stories right before ripping on an artist as talented as Ryan.

the guy had def. put out an album's worth of incredible material this year. he just put it on three spotty mediocre albums, double-discs and all. the guy is why itunes was invented. besides, as career suicides go it's a lot better than Neil Young's 80's albums.

here. that should help. check out the photo gallery. see the crazy band in a cemetery? yup, they crazy. ok, stupidity aside, i see this record as a children's ghost story, kinda gothy and melodramatic. sounds like fun to me. this should have come out on halloween.

The first song does sound like Truckin' a lot. I am not one of those Crazed Ryan Adams fans who thinks he can do no wrong. I thought Rock N'Roll had the appeal of cock cancer and the find some of his antics to be contrived and cliche. However, in his defense I think he is an amazing song writer. 29, just from a lyrical point of view, is so well articulated and has genuine appeal to those who us who like Ryan when he is less obvious about assuming the identities of other artists. He is always going to make concept records ... I think. His commitment to do so is both his best attribute and his most frustrating (for his fans). I personally love his acoustic somber give oral pleasure to a shotgun shit. I will always defend him as a lyrical genius clouded only by his inability to permanently shed the skin of the contrived notion of who he thinks the character of Ryan should be.
Regarding 29 ... I absolutely love it. Heartbreaker is always going to be tough to beat ... but this is close. Jacksonville was great, BUT this is superior lyrically (musically the two albums are distinguishable ... a staple for Ryan).
Love him or hate him, the little fucker can write.

Oops...anyway, if Ryan is not the artist of the year (warts and all) who is? Some of the songs on 29 rank with the best...dare I say ever? In all honesty, he has written at least 10 songs this year that are greater than the best of innumerable artists...a few did suck (strangely the specifiity of these vary widely) but come on, really...Blue Sky Blues and on and on, JUST listen without whatever prejudice you may have, without the media cynacism or whatever, slow down for a second and listen.

The best of his three releases this year by a country mile. This a great return to form, for the man who has been away with his country muse, for the last two records. Reminicent at times of Love is Hell (his best releases to date) dark and moody, sparse instrumentation with echoes of early rock and roll (loads of reverb and echo). Top track the beautiful 'Strawberry Wine' who's simple strumming patterns are a reminder of what Neil Young did at his best. Can't wait for his tour, which he owes us UK fans. Keep up the good work, proof positive that you can have too much of a good thing. Album of the Year, no contest. good on ya Ryan.
