Gravatar Clear and simple.
Great post OW.

Btw do you know the circulation numbers for the different newspapers?
Ultimas Noticias is the most popular one i have understand?

Gravatar Ultimas Noticias is by far the largest. It is now over 300,000. From what I understand El Nacional and El Universal are both around 30 to 40k and declining. The owner of El Nacional is trying to sell but can't find out a buyer.

Tal Cual is just a few thousand. You can barely find it at all outside of Caracas and even in Caracas you have to look really hard to find it. Even when I'm in Caracas I generally can't find it within walking distance and have to take the Metro to get to a place that sells it.

Gravatar Thanks for the info OW.
Ultimas Noticias is what I understand pretty "unbiased".
Good news that people want to read it.

Gravatar The editor of UN is somewhat pro-Chavez but also one of the best journalists in the country. The news is very unbiased, fall where it may. Bernal gets hammered every day. If you want to know the the latest shortcomings of the government our read UN as they really have their finger on the pulse of the country. Plus they do actual reporting for themselves unlike the other papers.

If you're not in Venezuela and want to follow the news I would highly recommend a subscription.

Gravatar Latin Nations Resist Plan for Monitor of Democracy

By JOEL BRINKLEY

Published: June 6, 2005
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., June 5 - The major nations of Latin America have told the United States that they cannot support an American plan to establish a permanent committee of the Organization of American States that would monitor the exercise of democracy in the hemisphere, Latin American diplomats said Sunday.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who arrived here on Sunday afternoon to serve as chairwoman of an O.A.S. meeting where the American plan is on the agenda, expressed frustration with their view, saying, "We have to have a discussion of how the organization can be effective if it does not have a mechanism that can help at times of crisis."

If the organization fails to approve the American proposal, it would be a significant diplomatic defeat for the United States - from a region that for decades has generally gone along with Washington's requests. The United States is negotiating with the other countries, though diplomats and officials said they made little progress on Sunday.

Gravatar This resounding defeat goes a long way in telling what the overall sentiment among LA nations is with regard to US intervention in foreign democratic affairs. This thinly disguised attempt to undermine democracies shows the level desperation that the US Admin feels at this moment as they see Leftist governments taking control and running their own show successfully. Judging by the words of Rice one would come to an understanding that She qua the US holds dominion over the interpretation of all that can be considered democratic. That is why the democratic smack down by Latin American Nations of the US proposal to the OAS is ever so more delicious.

Conservative types have and will try to throw as much spin on this issue as possible to give it a semblance of being something good. No amount of spin can lead the interested person to conclude that the US has had its nose rubbed in shit by those it tries to subject. The dog has bitten the hand after multiple beatings and will have no more of it. Take a look around notice all that is going on there are many angry dogs.

Gravatar Pulpo,

what all this crap is is the oposition knowing it can't win an election and so to get Chave out they need foriegn help to get rid of the "tyranny of the majority" they are faced with.

Thats why they get so excited about this and about MCM meeting Bush. Full stop.

Gravatar What I love the most about this is how they all clamor to the OAS now that thier little darling wants outside help, but if you recall last August OAS and Carter Center were both persona non grata among oppo circles.

Now the sell themselves cheaply with the hopes of outside intervention to the same source! The oppo are like pimps sending sweet Venezuela to be ravaged by the fat ugly guy to the north. They have no shame.
