Interesting stuff. The irony of this is incredible. I guess its do as I say not do as I do.

I'm sure in the U.S. the difference they are only taking property from poor people. Like this was only in a poor area - it wasn't in Stanford. And I but they are only doing this to private individuals, not to companies.

Before in Venezuela it was the same way. They would bulldoze homes that poor people built. Its now that Chavez is touching the property of the wealthy that some are crying like stuck pigs.

Venezuela's law is better and fairer because they only do it to property that isn't being used. The U.S. does it to property that clearly is being used.

Gravatar The hypocrisy is astounding in its brazeness.

However, this is hardly suprising. Given the depoliticized nature of US society, O-Grady's perverse opinions are accepted as perfectly reasonable.

Remind me of the punditocracy of England back in the day, explaining to the well tutored masses of sycophants how reasonable it was to force Ireland to export food to Britian while hundreds of thousands were starving.

Yeah, for this crew of moral no-shows it is absolutely acceptable that millions of people die to protect 'property rights'.

Sick, sad, but true.

Only a nation of well-trained sheep would accept O'Grady as some type of sage wise person--when they should be driving her out of the country on a rail after being tarred and feathered.

Gravatar OW: Thats a good one buddy!
Brazil along with India are leading the way in providing cheap drugs in the fight against HIV.

Its a terrible thing that alot of people refuse to learn how HIV is affecting Sub-Saharan Africa.

The pharmaceuticals will always go the route of making more money.

Here is an interesting article:

"The 90/10 divide
Ninety per cent of the world is at risk from infectious diseases, but only 10% of the world′s research and pharmaceutical resources are spent on them. Drug development for diseases that affect poor people has come to a virtual standstill. Gravatar There's that crazy little yellow guy with the shades again. I didnt call for him but he shows up anyway. Im starting to think im being followed OW. Keep on eye on him.

Gravatar Being the free software guy that I am I don't believe in intellectual property. That said infringing copyrights to save lives not only should be legal but anyone not doing so should be jailed.

Pfeizer makes enough money selling it to rich people, I call their stupid bluff that it is not worth it.

Gravatar "That said infringing copyrights to save lives not only should be legal but anyone not doing so should be jailed."

Very true. And yes the money from drugs is almost all made in the U.S. Everyone else freeloads

BTW, are you the person who got Chavez into free software?

Gravatar "BTW, are you the person who got Chavez into free software?"

Nah I have never met the man, it was my old man that told me about it originally, with the usual negative spin :D

Although Richard Stallman is aperantly a Chavista.

"# 17 August 2004 (Venezuelan recall referendum)

Venezuelan President Chavez won the recall referendum.

I'm proud to say that I was asked for, and gave, a message of support for his campaign. I hope I gained a few votes for him among free software users."

http://www.stallman.org/archives...04-jul- oct.html

Free software is the future and I am optimistic that we can become a beacon along with Brasil and China of open source.

I don't know if you have talked to Chavez or something but you might want to mention the space elevator technology, it only works around the equator an it will change space travel forever, see if you can mention it.

We have the technology for it today.

Gravatar Fidel: un sueño tardío
Manuel Felipe Sierra

El Nacional
24 Junio 2005

(Manuel Felipe Sierra, El Nacional, 24 Junio 2005)

Gravatar Parra, you coward. Too afraid to actually engage anyone here in debate, you are reduced to posting the thoughts of opposition, comprador hacks and flunkies.

But such is your delusion and the innate weakness of your pro-capitalist/pro-imperialist ideology--even your own mother would be ashamed of the degree to which you fall to kiss the smelly feet of Uncle Sammie.

Gravatar There is no need to ignore what happened, Castro did attempt to 'invade' Venezuela in the 60's, and lives were lost fighting an insurrection that was mostly local but aided logistically and financially from Cuba.

That said it was 40+ years ago and we won/beat such 'invasion' with minimal losses. Things have changed completely since then, Cuba is no position to act outside its borders, the Soviet Union is no longer prodding for instability, and Castro himself may be gone sooner than later. I know this is partly a made up outrage in order to fill the media, but that thing is ancient history now. If Vietnam can grow closer ties with the US today then this thing only proves that it is just politcal whining.

Our relationship with Cuba should be made purely looking at the future, and even though I have some misgivings about Castro... at least he is not Bush.

Gravatar Flanker, I generally concur.

However, I interpret that it is/was the neocolonial/neoliberal model that leads to perpetual instablility in any region of the world.

At its core, the neoliberal project is all about disempowering the majority population while rewarding an 'educated' and indoctrinated group of flunkies/compradors whose function it is to supervise the export of profits and wealth from the periphery to the colonial/imperialist powers.

The problem is with capitalism as it is practiced on the ground--the system where contradictions and 'externalities' (e.g., ecological destruction) will come back to haunt the parasitic powers.

Real stability is rooted in empowering all human beings to have a say as to their collective destiny. This is a radical and authentically democratic departure from what the US and European powers have in mind as a general game-plan for the world.

Radical leftism is a coming to the forefront of all the contradictions (exploitation, destruction, marginalization) that are shunted aside as the capitalist master thesis exerts a hegemonic control over people and the associated political discourses.

Authentic and non-hierarchical democratic associations which maximize the human potential to make sound ecological choices about development is a higher level of logic than the brutish domination that characterizes the flow of information (propaganda) and the by now discredited neoliberal model.

The power of propaganda looms large exactly in the discourse of the 'educated' classes that slavishly and foolishly put forward the idea that there can be no development outside of the decrepit world neoliberal order that is backed up by manipulative lies and weaponry that further state sponsored terror (which needs to cloak itself, nonetheless, in the discourse of freedom and democracy--its logical opposites).

The problem is not so much "Bush" as it is the structure of the existing imperialist model--with the USA as the leader whose goal it is to protect financial capital from authentic democracy (democracy has evolved as the binary opposite of oligarchy--and always, true democrats will seek to stifle the power of economic elites through egalitarian-based methodology. A Democrat president will engage many of the same destructive policies--but, perhaps, with a bit more tact. But the imperial world order is predicated on mass disinformation and marginalization of people from the institutions of power that make critical choices that harm the majority of the world's people.

Gravatar Off topic but did anyone notice that on another blog they are actually talking about how there wasn't any racism in Venezuela until Chavez came along. People are actually claiming that Venezuela was the one country in the world with no racism

These people are just so divorced from reality.

Gravatar Flanker:

"If Vietnam can grow closer ties with the US today then this thing only proves that it is just politcal whining. "

Excellent comparison. What is failed to mention are systems of government that change through time and affect the policies that govern the here and now. You hit the nail on the head. Time does not stand still and such attempts as those to associate past actions with present day are doing nothing more than creating false ties. You hit the nail on the head on that one.

Jim R.

More of that brother - insightful and to the point. Someone a while back mentioned Thomas Friedman (I think it was OW). His theory of the Golden Straight Jacket as opined in his book "The Lexus and the Olive Tree" clearly has not worked, and it will not work. That is the Golden Straight Jacket that international lending agencies use to take control of foreign economies by dictating what any country can spend its money on as terms for accepting loans to develop. Many of the terms limit spending on social services which will always be a detriment to the poor. If you want to get pissed off read that book - but like OW states the guy makes some (limited in my opinion) good points.

Gravatar Comandante P.,

Indeed, I am very aware of Friedman's work--both of the most recent ones.
I have heard detailed criticism of this corporate hack's arguments. Of course, he makes come valid, though platitudinal, points in the books; however, his cheerleading for globalization is the most absurd corporate minstrelism on its face.

We all filter information in ways that betray our deeply coded biases--but there is a difference between cogent argument and weak boosterism. Cogent counter arguments are kept from the majority population's consciousness by dint of the way that hierarchies of corporate power fund the making of 'mainstream' news. This is starkly clear by the way that the 'Downing Street Memo" was relegated to the back pages of US papers.

Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman's propaganda model of the media applies in today's world just as it did twenty years ago.

On it's face--the IMF/World Bank policies are causing mass immiseration. It is the job of the Friedmans of the world to pimp 'shit-on-a-stick' and honestly expect us, the people, to aquire a task for it over time.

(Uncle) Tom Freidman--hell no, we will not obey.

Gravatar Friedman is bright and that is why he has some decent observations. But at the end of the day his lack of understanding of economics does him in. Plus he tends to get mesmerized by what ever the latest fad is. Recently he has been mesmerized by outsourcing and the "rise" of places like India. While the economic growth in India is real he makes it sound like they are practically about to overtake the U.S. He thinks Bangalore is India when the real India is a place where most people can't read or write and poverty is extreme.

Gravatar OW:

Cant you see that there is only bangalore? You see only the sectors that are productive and incorporate the globilized model are what is real to economists. The rest is a write off - an expense that can be dealt with massive production, be it goods or services, as long as the numbers for any particular regions and or country are summed up as a whole. This innevitably excluded the areas of extreme poverty which which sees a rise in its numbers as popualtions shift from rural to urban areas for reasons of employment.

In this example you can transfix any Latin American rural town since the formula for both will remain the same if the formula for dealing with poverty and development remians the same for the IMF and World Bank. The problem is that this is what they want - and they get it when any of the poor nations accepts the terms of deals for loans. There is a structure in place t perpetuate the status quo and it is crumbling as we speak as the leftists Gov.s take hold in Lat. AM. Sometimes I wonder if the Iraq fiasco is not a blessing for Lat Am if only for its diversion of the neighbor up north. But that is like the chicken and the egg. Expect good things in future - I will.

Gravatar Yeah that goes for a lot of people - anyone below the middle class is simply a non-entity and doesn't count. That is certainly how the Venezuelan elite looks at the bottom half of society.

Gravatar How do you define elite OW?

Would you consider yourself part of Venezuela's elite, considering ur excelente english, that you are very well read, and your domination of current world affairs?, or the easy access u have to current government elite..

Wouln't you call vicepresident rangel elite, for example?

I must confess that it leave a bad taste in my mouth the easyness of how you disclosed certain readers IP's origin, and still to this day u wont disclose a single detail about your bussiness and concerns for my country.

Would your paranoia with whoever employer u have let u clear that matter for the readers of your blog? Why are u so afraid? Every single blog i have seen and read about venezuela is signed by someone with nombre y apellido, and occupation. The escualido blogs, the chavista blogs, the venezuelans, the extrangeros everyone except yours.

So therefore I challenge you to answer at least this very pertinent question:

Are you venezuelan OW?

And if you are, why wouldn't you consider yourself part of the elite, for the reasons I putted above?

One criticism from me to you OW: you like to generalize a lot, when it suits you. We dont live in a black and white world.

Gravatar ROB:

Elite is a generalization. I would, just to pick a number, would say it is the top 10% of people income wise. Yes, I generalize alot, that is true. But I don't think there is anything wrong with that as long as it is understood that they are generalizations. Not all wealthy people are one way nor all poor people another way. There are always exceptions. But it IS true that there are comments that one can make about groups that are true for the majority of people in those groups. I don't think I am saying anything contraversial if I say most wealthy people oppose Chavez and most poor people support him. There are exceptions to that but it is in the main true. Without using exceptions it is hard to discuss political and social phenomina and that is why they are used.

Am I part of the Venezuelan elite? Absolutely not. Not even close. That is why I have to worry about by job with my private employer - if I don't work I don't eat
I definitely can't be compared with some of opposition bloggers who are quite wealthy - I'm no Toro or Octavio, that is for sure. One of the nice things about having wealth is it can save you from the consequences of your actions. This blogger doesn't have that luxury, hence the caution.

So as mentioned before I am just a regular citizen and member of civil society. If some people, like JN, want to obsess about how I am able to take pictures that is their problem. I don't see that that issue is worth a 50 post thread. This blog it to discuss current events and ideas. And I discuss ideas here - not who Pulpo, or Kilo, or Jim, or ROB is.

Gravatar OW, I talked with H.C.--he said to speak with V.R. and D.C. about getting some up to date photos with reguard to the mission projects.

Just passing on the information amigo.

By the way--why didn't you show up to the brunch with the Chavista Bankers Association? You were expected.

With all the money that we are pouring your way to engage in positive propaganda, the least you could do is show up to bolster our standing with the people that fund and sustain our little revolution.

But, alas, you are more important things to do. Like work your little job for the imperialists--when you could be drinking fancy whiskey in Margarita with our associates.

Get with the program compadre.

I have to meet with F.C. this evening. He just arrived in Venezuela and needs to talk about how he can better turn the country into his own private colony.

My suggestion of transporting old cars and trucks from the 1950's to Venezuela to create that ever-so-important ambiance is sure to pique Comandante's interest.

I will fill you in later on our secret telephone network. Don't leave home without your red cell phone OW!

Gravatar Jim:

I think it might be too late. I just got out of a meeting with HC and man was he pissed. Ok, I've been a little slack in updating recently but Jesus, can't they cut me a little slack. I've never heard him even yell at Bernal they way he just did at me.

But you know what the worst part was? This all happened in front of Fidel. I mean, you want to talk about embarrasing. WTF, I make some mistakes and HC has to turn it into an international incident and humiliate me in front of heads of state. Almost makes me want to go and get a job ghost blogging for Octavio. I hear he pays well.
