I'd say this is half the economy booming and half enforcement. Seniat has closed for 24 to 48 hours any business that doesn't have its books completely in order.

The escualidos hate it but what can they do. ?Move to the U.S.? Hell they'll have to pay taxes there too. The difference being in Venezuela there taxes go to social programs. In the US their taxes go bombs for Iraq.

Gravatar This tax collection is a great achievement. Many LA countries struggle and depend on foreign "cooperation" b/c they don't collect enough taxes, in large part b/c the wealthy often campaign their way into tax "exemptions".

BTW the link isn't working for me.

Gravatar try it again, maybe the server was down. It works for me. its to a RNV article.

Gravatar Sandy:

Yeah, imagine to their horror they move to gringolandia only to discover that the goverment there expects them to pay taxes too.

Whats an escualido to do?

Gravatar I had always been looking for something like this. A great blog on Venezuela you have here. Very informative.

Its great to see Venezuela really moving foward and Chavez not repeating the mistakes of Allende.

Gravatar I am back from my short trip.

Hey OW--this is good news on the tax front.

This is a 'truism' of sorts--but if a nation cannot control their elite classes--especially by way of paying due taxes--that country is eventually doomed.

Revamping the tax agency and payments: yet another social democrat, reformist, measure that Chavez has taken.

For this and other measures more or less moderate in tone, Chavez is dubbed a 'dictator', 'anti-democratic', 'strong-man', etc.

The empire and its running dogs apply vastly different standards with repect to their allies, than they do with those that forcefull chanllenges the will and impositions of empire.
