This is amazing. I never heard of any of this myself. Looking at this you could really say that the US had a judicial coup where the Republican controlled courts bent the rules to enable Republican control of the executive branch. Which in turn appoints more Republican judges. And in all of this the law means nothing.
Sandy, this is merely business as usual in almost all capitalist representative democracies, and par for the course in a two party state
such as the USA.
Al Gore got more votes for president in 2000, but Bush won--go figure!
The US is the last nation on Earth that should preach to others about democracy. Sheeez!
Amendment: I am not saying that countries that considering themselves 'capitalist representative democracies' are really democratic in any substantive, cogent way, if the term 'democracy' is to have any tangible meaning. But they refer to themselves as such for propaganda purposes that are rooted in domestic politics.
I was wondering why you seemed to read such a reactionary newspaper as the Wall Street Journal. But things like this point out why it is good to do so. They are actually more candid about a lot of things in a paper like that where they think they are only talking to the rich and powerful. I had never heard of this before. Somehow I'm not surprised this never came up on CNN, Fox, CBS, or any of the regular media.
Yet they have the audacity to lecture others!
Indeed Anon, Chomsky filled me in years ago on the virtues of reading WSJ. The 'straight' news is a notch better than the New York Times--but their editorial section is troglodyte to the max.
I will never forget reading NYT one Saturday morning after a jury ruled that the US gov. was, to a degree, culpable for Martin Luther King, Jr.'s death (which the King family have believe for decades)--the reporters for the Times did everything in their interpretive/manipulative power to pooh-pooh the verdict by sliming the jurors.
Big corporate media sucks, in general.
