Gravatar I have as much to win or lose as any other French person and yet I have no voice

Do you ever get the itch to take French nationality, if only for this reason? For my part, I hate having to sit on the sidelines and watch someone else decide what the next five years of my life are going to look like, but at the same time, I can't quite convert that into trading in my British passport...

Gravatar Couldn't have it both ways and opt for dual nationality?

Gravatar Iain & Martin - Well I think (and I'm sure Iain knows better than me) that you can take dual, I certainly wouldn't give up British nationality. I'm not ready to take the leap yet but am considering it as something that I might do in the next couple of years.

The only disadvantage of not being French is that I cannot vote. However, are there any disadvantages to taking French nationality?

Gravatar However, are there any disadvantages to taking French nationality?

Other than being French, you mean? *shudders*

To be honest, I don't think that there are, now that compulsory national service is a thing of the past. I do suspect, however, that it would take about ten visits to the préfecture to actually achieve the desired result.

Gravatar Iain - well aside from that obvious disadvantage! (it's not something you would ever own up to would you )

Gravatar The big advantage of not being French is actually that you aren't. Imagine all those visits to get official recognition - and presumably you would also have to marry your Frog.

And, having read one of your previous articles about speaking the language badly, do you have any of those shruggy moments when the French say "Je ne comprends pas" when you KNOW you have only asked for a baguette...........

Gravatar Umm actually I married the Frenchman last year. So the biggest hurdle is over

Gravatar I agree with you on the hesitation between right and left... I know that today we all know the results, but from the beginning I was on the fence about the candidates. And I still am! I'm hoping and praying that Sarkozy will actually DO good things for the country and bring about positive economic reform, but I do find his humanity, or lack thereof, questionable.

Of course, I think that the violent reaction in certain parts of France to his election is horrible, and I can't help but wonder if Ségolène's provocative statements leading up to the election may not have played a role in these reactions... It's worth thinking about.
