Maybe if the geniuses in the GOP inside the Beltway had actually paid attention to raging federal deficits, the need for real energy independence, scandalous footsie with lobbyists, subprime snakiness on Wall Street, runaway personal debt on Main Street and more they wouldn't now be faced with electoral disaster.
In other words, if they had actually behaved like conservatives instead of pretending. Tom Cole wasn't responsible for those years of gutless meandering. He's too late to the party.
