Wow. I could have written that same exact post. Except my fill in the blanks would contain different names. Otherwise, almost exactly identical.

Yeah, that's what I meant at the end. It seems there are tons of people who could have written my post.

Just one question: Why Missisipi Fred MacDowell ? And why S ? OK 2 questions.

Mississippi Fred Macdowell ws an amazing bluesman. "Jesus Is On the Mainline" is one of his great songs. Of course Jesus is not on my main line. Seriously, his music is just raw and passionate and I like it.
My template is messed up. I have to do some fixing. : (

Out of curiousity, did you like 'Rejoice O' Youth'? I really disliked it when I read it. I told one of my teachers/ Rabbis that I had read and disliked it, and he told me he would never have recommended it to me- equates to his saying, "It's not your speed, Chana." Then again, we all have different personalities...
With regard to your comment on Gadol Hador's blog, wrote you back there ;)

I did like 'Rejoice O Youth'. Intellectually I'm not on the same page I was when I was a kid, obviously, but it spoke to me. I should reread it.
The English it is written in seems very dated, if I remember correctly. I could see that being a turn off (apart from the content ;) ).

This mostly ignored blogger has finally written about who he is. He seems like some sort of rebel yehshivishe-college guy from Ner Yisroel(?) probably. My Maggid Shuir is married to a great-granddaughter of Rav Baruch Ber Leibowitz (also known as the Birkas Shmuel), and I'm totally disgusted in the way you regard him.

I didn't give even the slightest hint how I regard R. Baruch Ber. You're projecting.

First of all rachak should be banned, these blogs are for adults only. Then again, I bet 10 to 1 that rachak (if he doesn't get married too quickly) will be a fellow apikores within 10 years, maybe we should just put up with him until then.
Anyhow S. this is the first post of yours that I read, and I like it. And why did I come by? Because (thus far) you're the only fellow that seems to have read my loooong post in godol's comments, and I appreciate that. And boy am I glad I stopped by!
I tell ya, I too could have written pretty much the exact same post, save that you seem to have started your yerida :-) later than I did but managed to progress quite speedily. I'm impressed, and jealous. If you get up the guts to go to an orgy, I'll be Really impressed.
Anyhow, liked the post, like you, and figure I'll read on. By the way, some people might not realize that Kaplan's chumash was an important part of the derech- looking for the word moses (son) and tzaphnath paneach (the neth speaks and this man lives) in ancient hyroglyphics? Huh! I wonder what else history might be able to teach us...

Gut Voch,
Actually, it wasn't the dated English (I'm an old English fan- it can be so much more beautiful) so much as the content that didnt't speak to me. I preferred R' Soloveitchik's writings- still do, in fact.
Thanks for replying...
mnuez- How old does one need to be to "participate"?

Good post - I pretty much agree with all of it, coming a lsightly different route myself though - and Anna Karenina was really so paint-dryingly dull - I don't care about Russian agricultural techniques. Sorry.

Don't forget, we are in the 'end of days.' Darkness rules the sky. Frum people recall this when they want to criticize the world but not when they look at themselves.

Maybe that "gadol in the making" was just being nice, and trying to make you feel good, or something . . .

Not enough info on yourself. Are you in your 30's/40's/50's etc.? What do you do for a living? Just a general idea.
You have an excellent blog. very interesting and informative.

Nice! (yes, I'm first reading this now and no, I'm not related to Baalbatish above).
I loved that Dershowits book. It's a shame I don't remember most of it, but I was in awe of the thought that perhaps Avraham failed the Akeida and that's why God no longer appeared to Avraham after that. Anyway, I'm not sure you have any way of knowing that you are still monitoring old posts, so I'll drop you an Email.

THat was my favorite part of the book as well... I had forgotten the part about Adam and Eve, very nice too. Great book.

"It took a while before I could realize that, you know, the fact that the Jastrow dictionary is in widespread use in yeshivos means something and was actually a victory of the haskalah, in fact."
Jastrow's use is now widespread because there is a need, more Jews are illiterate in the language of Chazal. I fail to see how thats a victory unless you mean the goal was in fact to secularize.

Actually, I feel like my experience has been the reverse; I was raised at a Conservative synagogue by parents who were raised Reform, and as much as I've always loved Torah and the hagim, I've only in the last two years been discovering how much I don't know! It's exciting - and slightly terrifying! But I just moved to Jerusalem for the year to start an intensive program of study, and I'm mainly hoping that it gives me the tools to continue that learning for the rest of my life. (I'm taking a Gemara course and some chazzanut, in addition to modern & biblical Hebrew and Arabic) I'll be checking back here frequently, and thanks!

Man! Can you be any more oblique? Tell us a little about yourself! Are you married? Do you have children? What city do you live in? What do you do for a living? What are your secrets and your dreams?
(Just kidding about the last part. Deathly serious about everythng else.)
