The Ramban was into empiricism. In his commentary he wrote that he went into the forest with the hunters to study the birds. The contrast with today's Orthodox "scholars" speaks for itself.

Alas, I can't really argue much about that, 'though its not completely dead as the (ironic) example of Nosson Slifkin shows.

Ummm, that example shows it *is* dead. Remember that whole ban thingie?

I just pictured the kannoim dragging out nosson slifkin as he protests "I'm not quite dead yet!" "Yes you are!" they reply. :-)

Sure, but realistically many chareidim still read and will read his books.

Gravatar I «heart» Ketav ‘Ivri

Gravatar Me too :D

Gravatar actually a lot of bnei braker are into empirical research and hands on measurement - it's a chazon ish thing.

Gravatar Makes sense.

Gravatar I like writing the Hebrew date on the board for each of my classes. For the Tanakh classes, instead of writing B"H or BS"D or whatnot above the date in the corner, i write B"Y in Ketav ‘Ivri :-P (i'm such a [diqduq]geek).

B"Y standing, of course, for b‘ezrat YHVH.

Gravatar What do you teach?

Gravatar high school limudey qodesh — mostly Tanakh and Parshanut, to be specific.

Gravatar Cool. I wish I had you in high school. :D

Gravatar That's just cause i'm a pushover :-P
