That particular expression, which precedes the name of a book's owner written on the inside cover, is used to denote a caveat to the owner's claim of possession. In effect, it says, "Everything on earth belongs to God, but this book is in the possion of___________." The groan was warranted.

Groan warranted, yes, but it's more than just a qualification to the owner's possession. It is also taken as permission to use the book, since truly only God owns all things.
