Maybe Judah Aryeh ben Jacob is suppose to be Judah Aryeh ben Isaac (of Modena).

A couple of centuries off. It seems to me that he's just a guy. Not someone who is likely to be identified. A Jewish man in Scotland who taught some Christian youths Hebrew and Torah in the early part of the 19th century.

He knows too much. He must have gone to a modern orthodox girls seminary.
Seriously, a number of the church fathers learned from Rabbis. It would be interesting to know who they were and whether the work was done for pay or for free.

The Jewish community in Scotland can't have been very large in the mid-19th c., but even still, this man's teacher was probably a local melamed.

Early 19th c. Duncan was 45 when applying to this post in 1839.
Yerachiel, Jerome notably learned Hebrew from a Jew in Tiberias, who he calls "Rabbi bar Anina." He said that he had to be taught in secret and at night. He also refers to a couple of other rabbis he learned from, albeit not by name.
I was hoping someone would notice his expression that "one who trembles at God's word" would be grieved by the Yalkut.

This post is extremely interesting, for several reasons. It shows that back then, Jews were happy to teach non-Jews the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, and Jewish tradition. There was a very strong connection between the Puritans and Hebrew. They studied Hebrew from Jews, and learned the Tanakh. Jerome also learned Hebrew from Jews. Yet sadly, today, there is no synagogue in the whole of the UK who would teach Hebrew or anything to do with Judaism to non-Jews. Maybe it is different in other countries, but Jews in the UK erect a wall when anyone non-Jewish asks about learning Hebrew, and refuse to teach. It is very sad. Jews used to be the light of the nations, but not any more.
