Phrenology may seem bizarre to us moderns, Especially living in a posT holocaust world, but in the 19th c it was a widely accepted science without the dangerous implications it later assumed.
And was a pretty "racy" issue, at least as far as the Jewish article was concrrnrd

Rabbi Illowy was the first orthodox Rabbi in St. Louis, although he was only here for one year.
I have read that he was close with Rav Shimshon Rafael Hirsch and would correspond with Rav Hirsch regarding matters of halacha.
