"I then added that after all scholarship does little more than study sermons that have become 2,000 years old"

priceless :)

Very cute! And very mature.

Is "that" in the final sentence a typo?

Yes (ie, transcription error). Should read "than."

Gravatar Awesome!

Gravatar Was it Sunday or Saturday? And why were they in the Seminary on Saturday? (Kaplan had his own congregation to tend to.) And what was this "faculty room" they were going to?

In addition, I don't really get Ginzberg's problem (did he favor them or not?), Kaplan's response, Kaplan's second response, and Kaplan's never-delivered response. I guess you had to be there.

Gravatar More. Please.

Gravatar I remember skimming through that Journal and closing it in disgust after several minutes. Follow the glossary for any of the greatest Jews in the last century and you will see that Kaplan had not a good word to say about anyone (R' Kook is a "fakir", the Ridvaz a cunning swindler,etc.,etc.). Lovely person wasn't he.

I found the Kaplan figure in "The Promise" worthy of respect if nothing else which contrats strangely with the Kaplan of the Journal.

Gravatar If it's any comfort, he seems to dislike his JTS colleagues most of all.

Gravatar For a man so interested in civilization, he doesnt seem to have been very civil.

Gravatar My favorite Kaplan quote is, "On the one hand, you had Reform. On the other hand, you had Orthodox. And on both hands, you had Conservative."

Gravatar > I remember skimming through that Journal and closing it in disgust after several minutes.<

This is quite common. Ever wonder why the reform movement does not translate the letters of their german predecessors into English? from what I understand, its often not a pretty sight.

Gravatar >More. Please.

More what? Ovaltine? Porridge?

Gravatar well, now that you ask, I'll take some porridge.
