That's really cool.

Gravatar The Haham who authorized the book is identified on the second page as "Ishac" Nieto. Isaac Nieto (1702-1774) was the Haham of the Bevis Marks synagogue and the son of David Nieto, about whom you posted last month. Yes, the author is Aaron Mendoza and yes, the book claims to be based on the Shulhan Arukh.

Gravatar Heeeeeeeeey,

Did that guy just thrust his shcita knife into that beam? Woulden't cause grooves and scratches rendering it pasul? :)

Gravatar Not along the edge.

Gravatar Does anyone really believe that any shochet wore such a getup during schita? :)

Gravatar That looks like an elephant? Are elephants kosher?

Gravatar In general, there is a significant amount of literature in Spanish and Portuguese published in the Marrano communities of Amsterdam, Italy, and London that has not been properly examined and is essentially lost. It includes practical guides, like this one, but also ethical treatises and even philosophical and Kabbalistic works.

I wish someone would fund such an effort. It would be truly worthwhile.

Gravatar Someone commented on this article on DovBear's site. On top of the third page in the booklet, it seems to say (using my high school Spanish)

Fish and Lobster(there are those that we can eat) do not need to be shechted.

What's that all about?

Gravatar It's OK: according to my Bantam college Spanish dictionary, "langosta" is used not only for lobster, but also for locust.

Gravatar I'm glad that people are reading it!

Gravatar How the hell would you slaughter a locust anyway? :)

Gravatar sigh.
I've tried five different times, last night and now, to download this--and cant'. It gets to 320k and cuts off, making an unuseable file.
Can anyone assist?

And if not, shabbat shalom in any case.

Gravatar Use getright or another download manager. For some reason all my downloads crap out if I don't use one. On Internet Explorer, anyway. Firefox always works.

Gravatar The more I see pictures of animals about to be slaughtered, the more I want to go vegetarian. But then I forget all about it and go back to my hamburger.
