Amy,

I'll be interested to see your comments (and time) on Bryon's Fri NY Sun. I quickly crashed and burned.

I had just ordered some stuff from Amazon and needed to pad my order for the Super Saver shipping, then learned my order wouldn't ship until mid-October because I included S&S 252 which doesn't come out until October. Not good, because I ordered Peter Gordon's Mensa Sudoku book and I need to learn his super advanced techniques for the Paramus tournament at the end of September.

Then I learn that they're shipping my order in separate chunks anyway and I would have gotten the Gordon book early anyway... oh well.

Hex cryptics come highly recommended from this corner. I can't think of any other puzzlemeisters (besides Henry Hook) who are equally skilled making both regular crosswords and cryptics.

Yeah, Byron's Friday is pretty tough-- I looked up one entry and still had a wrong letter.

I can't remember whether it was the NYT or the NYS, but I do recall a Frank Longo puzzle having the same theme as today's LAT. In Longo's case I believe the hint to the theme was in the SE corner. Will investigate.

It was a NYT puzzle, Sept. 6, 2001. He also used HOMEGAMES, and the hint to the theme was actually in the SW corner.

But then again, I wouldn't be at all surprised if this theme has cropped any number of times.
