Haven't got 2, but for number 3 the number 111 involves no C's or X's.

And for number 2, 108 is written in the expected way.

Aha! #2 is done. And also #3. Thanks, Cole!

If anyone else is hankering for hints on others, go ahead and ask here.

I'm stuck on #24. Hints? I have 3 letter or a 5 letter word for the "after". Had a great answer using the 3 letter word, (courtesy of my daughter) but it adds up to only 2000.

Ah, it only takes asking for help... Neither of my "after" words for #24 was the right one. The real one has 6 letters. All done now, with 3 googles.

13 and 14 have me stumped, but I feel like I should have solved those by now.
4 and 19 I can't figure out, because I'm not sure I even know the first part of those (especially 4), so even hints may not help me put those together. They're the only two I've 'given up' on.

Great little puzzle - wish they had an extra puzzle every week.

#13 is two words. The first word is all "roman" letters.

#14 is also two words. How does a direct marketer do his/her work?

#4 I had to google. #19, the second word commonly appears in crosswords, and the first is two words.

Howard, I was stumped on #4, too. My husband didn't recall the exact name but said it sounded like a fake town name—that was all the help I needed.

#13 starts with an 11-word phrase.

Question about #14: Does the 1103 break down into DDLLIII? Is the before phrase hyphenated?

Thanks, got 13 and 14 not long afterward. #19 was vaguely familiar to me, but not apparent, so didn't feel bad about being stumped there (not much of a drinker). Solved all now except #4 (impossible for me without a lookup, so will be no 'aha' moment on that when I find it), and surprisingly, #6, which I forgot - will try that later.

#14 does not break down that way, and the phrase is not hyphenated.

#6 used a slang term for "Blotto" that I'd never seen used that way.

And apparently I'm not done with #14!

The short word for #14 has 5 letters, one of which is a vowel. The long answer has 11 letters.

I had seen the "blotto" word for #6, but didn't really know that's what it meant. It just fit so well. My daughter thought it should have an "e" after the "x", but spelt that way, it's a computer term.

I don't understand what you mean by "#13 starts with an 11-word phrase".

You mean the short word for #14 has 4 letters (I hope).

I think #4 and #6 may be a lost cause for me at this point, as much as I hate to say that. I'm a persistent one ;).
Great puzzle, but unlike many crosswords, if you are unfamiliar with the larger word or phrase, you usually don't have any shot at the full answer in this one. That seems to be my weakness on the last two (although #6 may still just be rattling around my subconscious, somewhere).

No, Howard, my short word for #14 has 5 letters. It starts with its only vowel. My long answer has 11 in two words.

Short word for #6 has 4 letters, long word has 9, adding the minimal set of DLXII.

You're right about #4. If you don't know it, you won't get it. I had to Google, which means I really can't count the answer as "gotten."

Whoops. you're right; short word is 5, we both have it. When I typed that, I was looking at the shorter word of the two-word long answer. Serves me right for posting BC (before coffee).

Thanks for all the help with these clues; it's made puzzles like this more of a communal, enjoyable experience. This is where technology shines (as opposed to, say, obnoxious cellphone ringtones at maximum volume).

Type of Crime - 1157 = D'Ubervilles Dame.

What a great blog!

Anyone have a hint for #10? Thanks.

#10: 10 letters / 3 letters. Thus, 7 "roman" letters.

I thought the sense of the clue for the short word was stronger than the meaning I usually apply to that word.

Does that help?

Ooh ooh! Thanks for the hint on #10.

The second word was the problem.

Can anyone provide a link to the solution to Roman Holiday?

Hey, any word on the link, by any chance?

Okay. If no one has the link, how about the answer to number 20?
Foldable cellphones - 1250 = fire aftermath.

Cynta E. I have the rest of them if you'd like some help.

Nancy, for #20, 1250 breaks down into the letters MCLLL and the cellphones might be said to be bivalves. Does that help?

Yes, Orange. Got it. Thanks a lot.

Hi, Nancy Davis--Thanks for the offer of help. I need 2, 10, 16, and 24. I don't want to be a spoiler for anyone, so if you'd send it to cyntae@gmail.com, I think everyone would be happy. Well, I certainly would anyway. Who is this crafty Mike Shenk and how does he make up these insanely addictive things?

Oh, I just figured out #24! Ha! So I need 2, 10, and 16!
