Congrats on "hangry" - "newsrotica" is a Terrrrrrible word.

My wife gets hangry. I just get sick when I don't eat.

As I flew home from the Dictionary Society of North America (DSNA) meeting I plugged my headphones into the audio recorder to see how the Open Mic event recording sounded. The pre-event chatter came through crystal clear but 11 minutes into the hour and 22 minute recording...silence...

My heart sank (sunk? clunk! funk!)

I was elated though when I managed to plug the memory card into my computer at home to find the audio was indeed captured in full. So podictionary will indeed be podcasting this recording sometime soon (audio editing is required first). As well, Grant Barrett in his other hat as co-host of the NPR KPBS radio show "A Way With Words" will be using the audio too so the contest will get some additional play on that show.

Other things from the DSNA meeting that are likely to appear on podictionary are (1) an interview with Orion Montoya, the guy who runs the Oxford English Corpus, that 1.8 billion word database Oxford uses to research how we communicate. And (2) an interview with Johnny Carrera, a dictionary artist who has lovingly created PICTORIAL WEBSTER'S, a remarkable little book printed in only 100 copies (see his site at quercuspress.com.)

That book costs about three grand! Wow.

Congrats on the win, Amy! Alas, I get hangry multiple times a day if I don't keep up with the grazing. We call it "hungry crabby" in my house, which doesn't have the parsimony of hangry but somehow better captures the essence of the experience for me, with lots of hunger-induced irritability aimed at any- and everything. That said, those subjected to my hungry-crabbiness might say hangry describes it more than adequately!

Hi Amy, yesterday (June 19) in the Tempo section of the Tribune there was an article on the Open Mic Event. I was there and really enjoyed hearing people geek out over words (I was the geek who got the Metcalf book). Do you remember what the 'om' word was? I checked the DSNA site but didn't find any info.

You had "wordly," right? I forgot to look for the article in the Tribune, so thanks for the link, Lesley! No idea about the "om" word, sorry.

The 'om' word was 'omergency'; I was the only one who voted for it -- it's something I experience often ("an urgent need to get in touch with the universe").
