I know you haven't posted on the CS puzzle yet, but one of the clues in CS is simply factually wrong. I rarely say this, but this time, I'm certain. The clue is "Wrath, in a hymn" - the answer means "of wrath." It's a Latin genitive. "Wrath" and "of wrath" might be close enough for some, but in Latin they are fundamentally different words - spelled differently, even.

I did like the CS clue at 51A, though...

typing, filing, calling, billing -- how nice to have had this past week off and to have been excused from this comibination of tasks for a spell!

was recently in a store that sells novelty items and saw a key ring with a small iron-filing "put the beard on the man's face" charm attached. managed not to buy it but this definitely put "iron filings" back on my radar!

back to work on wednesday -- typing, filing, calling, billing, etc., etc., etc. (it's okay, actually, since it's all for a good cause!)

thx always for your upbeat take on the puzzles, orange -- and to all: a happy, healthy 2008!

;-)

After Saturday I could not bring myself to do a puzzle for two days so I did the Sunday this morning.

Question: Are ANTOL Fugard and ATHOL Fugard the same person?

Orange, I had no trouble with the Monday NYT, but my time was 3x yours. How do you make the pen(cil) move that fast? Do I need to buy your book?

Jim: Yes. Yes, you need to buy my book. Of course! :-) Or you could be content with being a very good crossword solver and pay no mind to time differentials. The book should help hone your solving skills, though—I've heard from a number of people who have improved their skills by reading the book. (Sure would be nice to see a testimonial to that effect in the Amazon customer reviews...)

Rick, I think "Antol Fugard" is a douple typo. It gets a few Google hits, but the only Fugard famous enough for crosswords is playwright Athol.

Michael, I can't rebut a Latin nit.

Orange,
Thank you very much for your comment. :-)
I went over to Amazon and noted that you do have some good reviews, including a couple that credit you with improving their solving.
I also added a comment to the "Lusak" review. He/she clearly intended to give you a high rating but accidentally gave you only one star.
Wishing you continued success in the new year.
Jim

Yes, that's my favorite review, Jim! (The reviewer used to know how to give 5 stars to books she/he liked...)

Orange,

Since you have access could you please check ANTOL Fugard at cruciverb. I'm positive I've seen this in a puzzle.

I plan on signing up next month but don't want my NYT sub. and that to renew at the same time.

TIA if you have the time.

Rick, ANTOL's not in the database. Sorry!

Thanks Orange, too much egg nog I guess.
