Sarah,
Oh, that would make Tatum so sad! If the snake was over 4-5 feet, it was most likely non-venomous. If it was black, it was most likely a snake that actually preys on OTHER snakes. And, if it was a big, non-venomous snake near your home, that indicates there are either other snakes or rats/mice near it that it was planning to take care of for you. And, my parents and two sets of neighbors spent about 45 minutes trying to kill a 24 inch corn snake with a hoe when I was a child...it takes a lot to kill a snake. I acknowledge your bravery though. LOL

Oh my.......I'd be tempted to never step outside again either. Track the snake? Seriously, he is too funny. I wish I could have heard the conversation. I pray that the snake is long gone........and away........but not headed towards my TX house either!

Oh, girl, the craziness sounds like my life (except without the farm animals . When you have an escape artist in the family, there is never a dull moment, for sure. By the way, a couple of weeks ago, I had to chop a snake's head off, but not nearly as big as yours. It was a baby. Which means there has to be a mama around somewhere . But let me say that I chopped it without holding it down with my hands. Touching it would have been absolutely gross! What is your husband thinking? Sometime I will have to tell you the story about the first snake I found whose head would not be chopped! DISGUSTING. That's all I am saying for now .

According to my Kenyan friend Herbert, goats are very good to eat. I say give it a shot. Worst case you have one less goat. Could be used as a school project. If you want I can have him come up and show you how to process the entire goat. Be careful he might want to take a few for himself.

What a great post.
Snakes are not high on my list for beloved animals, which is why I love living in central Canada...
I won't even discuss goats and I am terrified of chickens.
I did grow up on a farm...lol.

Could I laugh any harder at this post. I particularly enjoyed your husband's reaction while in a staff meeting.

Brings back "fond" memories of my childhood when my mom was the neighborhood snake killer! Our house backed up to a huge wooded area so we often had snakes around. My mom would do just as your husband advised....well, I'm not sure if she actually held the snakes down, but she did chop off their heads with her trusty shovel! She became well known for her services. And she didn't just stop with chopping off the head. She wanted to make sure that snake was dead so she'd continue chopping until it was in little bits. One day she came upon a type of snake she didn't recognize and after chopping it up she put it in a paper bag and took it over to get an opinion from one of the guys building the new house down the street. She opened the bag to show it to him and asked him what he thought it was. He peered in the bag and without hesitation he replied, "Looks like beef stew to me!"

Dear Lord, Sarah needs some extra Diet Coke and chocolate today. And some closed-toed shoes. Thank you for the rat snake, though. I think. Because it wasn't poisonous. In Jesus' name. Amen

Sounds like today might be a good day for a tall glass of diet pepsi, some relaxing music and some knitting while the little people take a rest.
We've been having some late afternoon movie times- love pay per view! We've even watched Swiss Family Robinson which sounds a lot like your yard right now.
