RossK,

I guess it doesn't hurt for people living outside Vancouver to write too?

I remember when Vancouver Symphony Orchestra was sliding into bankruptcy a few years back. I sent them a cheque for $100. and told them that VSO was important to a far bigger area than just the city of Vancouver.

Next thing I knew, the mayor was talking it up on CBC radio -- this amazing support from Pender Island, he said -- and he seemed surprised. That surprised ME. Don't they know these things?

Same for Pacific Spirit Park, eh? And Stanley Park.

Gravatar Done, and done, Ross . . . .

Gravatar Yes Mary....by all means.....if I was from out of town I would suggest you write to:

The chair, Louis Jackson:
mayor@corp.delta.bc.ca

And the guy trying to separate himself from Sam Sullivan, Peter Ladner:
peter.ladner@vancouver.ca

(I'm not convinced that the other Vancouver councillors are willing to go against the Gordo/Sammy Developer Bund at the moment, but I could be wrong - especially about Ms. Anton)

Thanks Bob!

Someday, I'd like to see a seawall go all the way from Stanley Park to Pacific Spirit Park where it comes down to Spanish Banks (with a bike/pedestrian bridge over False Creek). From there you could hike up through the park all the way through to the banks of the Fraser*. Wouldn't that be something!

(*cuttingn out the heart of the park, however, would make that impossible forever)

.

Gravatar Great idea, Ross . . . .

Gravatar Gettin' lots of Email.....thanks everyone!

Some have asked 'But what about the Musqueam.....

It's OK, that's part of the bait and switch, there are ways to give the Musqueam what they need right now.....

Here's how I put it in my Email to one Vancouver Councillor:

Dear Mr. Ladner,

As a resident of the City of Vancouver, I am writing to you about the proposed residential development of Block F which is located at the very heart of Pacific Sprit Park.

I would like to suggest that you and the other MetroVancouver Directors ask for more time to consider this issue carefully for many, many reasons.

However, at this critical time, I will state just two that I believe are most important:

1) Specifically, there are other possibilities, including re-shaping the existing UBC Golf Course with a development component now rather than the year 2083 such that both the Golf links and the Park can be maintained intact forever, while at the same time fully delivering on the 'Spirit' of Bill 12 for the Musqueam.

2) Generally, sacrificing parkland, especially urban parkland, for political reasons, regardless how noble those reasons are in principle, is a very dangerous precedent indeed. Thus, the utmost caution as well as thorough consultation are required. It is my understanding that the latter consultation, through no fault of the Directors themselves, has not yet happened at the Metro Vancouver level.

I realize that taking such a stand will be difficult for many of the Directors given the optics. However, on that matter I refer again to my first point - there are alternatives that can satisfy everyone involved - the Musqueam, the Golfers, and the Public - in perpetuity. Therefore, I most sincerely hope that Metro Vancouver can step back for the moment and take a long range view of the situation before any decision is made.......

But really, at this point that is not the issue. The point is to get to the MetroVancouver Directors with numbers, not logic (that can come later).

OK?

Gravatar Done and done. To all of them.

Gravatar Thanks Dana!

.

Gravatar Bigger E now firing off stuff to her friends.....here's hopin' the whippersnappers come through....

.

Gravatar tough one-- money talks with the musqueam-treason by treaty ---your only hope to stop gordo (the gargler )is to MAKE HIM KNOW THAT HE WILL,WITHOUT FAIL LOSE HIS OWN RIDING IF THIS ISN`T STOPPED! (HEADLINES -EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT ) gordon campbell, has for all intensive purposes has "sacrificed " his riding and leadership --all in the name of a ill con-cieved (spirit park condo-gate)

Gravatar Grant g--

Ultimately, I think you are correct....And as you might imagine there are a lot of folks in his riding, some of them well connected, who are pretty upset now that they are coming to understand the bait and switch that has been pulled here.

.

Gravatar continuing.....

Thus, getting the GVRD directors to say, "Hey! Hang on there a second' is so important because it will bring the media back to the story, especially given what happened in Pitt Meadows earlier this week.

Gravatar I agree with BC Mary above, re: the loss of such a jewel effect more than the city folk. I rarely cross-comment, but I left his over at the Galloping National Critter earlier:

As a resident of an area far outside of the lower mainland (thank the lord) I guess I don't really have a voice in this debate. However, if Pacific Spirit Park is that wonderful area just west of UBC, including Wreck Beach, then I feel that in reality that land is of concern to ALL residents of British Columbia. It is a unique wild variation of Stanley Park that should be saved as the last remaining vestige of what was - before it was buried under the garbage pile commonly referred to as the City of Vancouver.

Of course, I don't feel that I have much of a voice in Victoria or Ottawa about things that occur even in my own backyard. And that is not to denigrate either my MLA or MP, both of which are about as good as it gets. Our form of government is just about completely broken. Gordon Campbell and his cabal of cohorts decide pretty much what happens in BC whether anyone else likes it or not. As to the rest of Canada, it's all up to plump Stephen, who even tells his cohorts what to think!

Gravatar Thanks Kootcoot--

And, of course, you are absolutely correct that this park is everyone's.
