Vancouver Coastal Health plans to cut elective procedures during 2010 games

Elective surgeries will be cut by 30 per cent while the games are on

I am SO tired of it all.

Gravatar By the way, it looks like the cbc got it right too

B.C. deficit to exceed $495M next year: finance minister

Gravatar Merci GAB.

Dig that last line in the WX story.....

"While Coastal Health is reducing surgeries, the authority has also announced all 25,000 Olympic volunteers will be eligible for free flu shots."

As for the rest of the peons whose employers aren't giving them time off for the party, well.....

.

Gravatar Don't you find the difference between the numbers from the Province and the auditor interesting? How does one account for the Number discrepency in the surplus?

Not to mention the issues the auditor had with their accounting - from the report itself:
" Responsibility for the preparation of the government's financial statements resides with my office. The applications of
GAAP can be challenging and requires the use of professional judgement. This judgement is based on full analysis of the
transactions and programs, application of Canadian guidance, and may involve broad consultation with other jurisdictions
and professional accountants.
Each year the Auditor General expresses his opinion on the Summary Financial Statements based on his audit. This
year, the Auditor General has expressed a qualified audit opinion and noted a few reservations in areas he believes the
financial statements have departed from Canadian GAAP. These are difficult areas that depend on professional
judgement; we will continue to have discussion with the Auditor General in regard to these reservations."

My question is, what reservations did he have EXACTLY,about the areas where he feels the province departed from GAAP ( Generally accepted sccounting principles)

Easy speak, it seems they are using a method of accounting principles that are not considered acceptable by any Canadian standard.

Seems that explains why everyone else knew the projected deficit was a lie, and they did not... har har har...

Gravatar *sccounting = accounting

Gravatar Another interesting read is the Ministerial Accountability Report.

Explains how wonderful all the ministers are doing with their budgeting. All were under their given budgets. ( yes, sure they were, because they've made so many cuts everywhere to everything but their salaries)

Gravatar Thanks Laila--

As for this:

"....it seems they are using a method of accounting principles that are not considered acceptable by any Canadian standard."

Is it possible that they are using Enron.....errrrr.....Accenture-acceptable practices?

All snark aside, it's interesting how they are clearly willing to ignore what's already out there, in the public record, as they spew their own spin.

Does this mean that they actually know they won't be called on it?

(he asked rhetorically)

Gravatar Is anyone with any interest in what's going on in this province surprised?
It was obvious to me as a BC "Newbie" that gordo's camp was cooking the books in order to get re-elected.

As a "newbie" I have a "queery":

I know that BC has set 4-year elections. Yet, it is a Parliamentary system, right? If the public/opposition should get PO'd enough to have a no-confidence vote, is it a viable alternative?!? Or, are we stuck with gordo and company for another 4 years ? ? ? ?

Gravatar Bob,

As I understand it, confidence votes can only bring down a minority gov't and the liberals have a majority.

Okay, well, I guess theoretically, if a motion of confidence were called and enough members of the gov't party voted no confidence, the gov't would fall, but the chances of any fat pigs at the gov't trough voting against their gravy train are pretty much none.

What we do have is recall legislation which can be put into effect 18 months after an election.

I think there were enough close races during the election that well organised recall campaigns could shift the balance of power.

Gravatar What GAB said--

And more to the point I can't think of a time it's happened in BC since I've been alive, which is a reasonably (pretty long?) time.

.

Gravatar GAB & RossK, thanks for that primer in BC civics.

You've clarified it a lot for me.

Muchas gracias.

Can you hear me, RossK? I know you're old and all.
