They hate Canada because Canada is successful. And Canada is successful with a economy that is decidedly mixed with sane and sensible government regulation on many aspects of the economy.
They hate Canada because the population, for the most part, is smart enough to grasp that the fundamental premise behind their economic ideology is fundamentally flawed.
Friedman and the Chicago school couldn't quite grasp that government intervention is, in fact, part of the natural free market. He did not understand that government is the response of the people (ie players in the free market) to a another player or group of players in the market that are "gaming" the system.
They hate Canada because, for the most part, the population tends to resist the cattle calls on social issues much more then their American counterparts. And it drives them nuts that they can't exploit these natural divisions to gain power, that they need to hid their utter contempt for the people they are trying to wrest power from.
They hate Canada because they have had unfettered control of the media for decades and Canadians still resist (not nearly enough mind you) believing everything they say is true. Canada still, as an example, has the gall to believe that the Health Care is a fundamental right.
They ducks these meetings because they suffer the delusion that they are smarter then us and understand the issues better then us and they shouldn't have to take the time to explain anything. And that we, the people, are nothing more then ignorant rubes that don't "get it".

Re: the last part.....I think they also ducks us because they really do believe in the 'noble lie'....thing is, it's way harder dole those things out when you are looking real people right in the eye.

Possibly a bigger question, RossK, is why do Canadians continue to vote for candidates that refuse to appear in these debates? A sad commentary on the candidates and the voting populace.
Not that the US is any better.
Is rove1luntz1 Disease really that much of a pandemic ? ? ? ?

Bob--
I'm not sure they actually know.
'Canadians' I mean.
Remember the Dona Cadman thing where the horsemen whisked her away from everything and everyone....? How much play did that really get?

So in the next election, I plan to seek out whatever Con runs in our district (and maybe a couple in other local districts) and ask them questions, one on one, and record and post the results.
Digital voice recorders are little, cheap and produce surprisingly good quality recordings.
What is even more infuriating, IMHO, is the specialized training that allows the more practiced Cons to talk for great chunks of time and appear to be addressing questions while either avoiding them, spreading misinformation, or just plain lying. I listen to The House every weekend and I'm tempted to do a deconstruction of such interviews, like a nutrition chart showing:
a) protein and vitamins (thoughts and facts) versus
b) sugar and fat, (Con self-promotion and stroking)
c) salt, artificial flavours and additives (misdirection, and implied arguments not said outright)
d) roughage (meaningless strings of bafflegab)
e) rodent droppings and pollutants (outright lies.)

Hi Ross, great to have you back....as to:
"Diana Dilworth Hides From Her Constituents"
I'm not trying to be picky, but as far as I can tell, Mz. Dilworth has no constituents, and hopefully it will remain that way.
Maybe the StealthCons don't feel obligated to show up, cuz they are soooo busy keeping in touch with us via taxpayer funded junkmail (that crap that forces me to bring a crowbar to empty my mailbox from MPs that represent god knows what riding). One good thing about the "bad" economy is that the Cons' hatemail is almost the only junkmail left - it seems like most other businesses aren't bothering to shill to people who aren't gonna buy anything anyway.
My favorite example of stealth campaigning was Chubby Sweater Boy Steve's first campaign "event" last time - when he flew out from the palace in the East and promptly disappeared into an oriental family's house in Richmond while his minions painstakingly set up the back yard full of toys as staging for his photo op (which he briefly appeared for after allegedly spooning the gruel into the littlest kid - but who knows what he actually did in that house in Richmond, other than hide out for the morning).
Did we have to pay his airfare out here to hide out in that house, or were the PsuedoCons able to pick up the tab with some of their ill-gotten "in and out" money?
Even worse than the fact he (and his droids) do such things, is the fact that what passes for media or a press in Canada actually treats it like a newsworthy event!

Excellent point koot--
Those previously 'potential' constituents are now, as I write this Tuesday now definitely non-existent...
