The 'projectiles' might.
There are still questions to be answered....They're backpeddling......

The MSM is on it now. They got a denial, and then a backpeddle. That's like blood in the water to them. This one is far from over.

Not exactly unexpected, though the speed with which they're backpedaling makes the Afghan prisoners scandal look like a slo-mo film. This one is far, far, far from over.
The rest of my reaction cannot be printed in a family newspaper.

Ian--
Why not have a go at the pro-media yoemen/women through this thing.
Do we start with J. Bryden?

Ian and I had a 'vigorous' discussion about whether or not there had been some pro-media footdragging on this in the beginning (you can imagine who was in each corner)....what's your opinion?

I wonder if the SP read english blogs.
I wouldn't say media dragged it's feet, it's summer, a lot of people on vacation, one more protest, one more union complaint. You'd be surprised what comes into a newsroom any given day, and if you don't have the bodies to follow up you don't follow up.
It's not an excuse, sometimes it's just a reason.
CP breaking it helped a lot, every outlet was free to pick it up.
Their video comment- given yours, is rather good.
Blog on!

Ross,
Bryden first and foremost. David Akin at CTV was good; CBC sort of spread the effort. That was true of a lot of them. What disappointed me was the Mope and Wail seemed to be MIA.

Bene D - What do you think of the translation? Are we getting it right that they are officially saying that they were fingered when they wouldn't launch (ie. throw?) their projectiles (ie. rocks)?
Regardless it seems that they are essentially admitting that they were carrying projectiles as part of the 'ruse'.
______
Ian--
I'm pretty much in agreement with you there, although I'd have to be willing to concede that Mr. Akin's willingness to to pick it up at all was important (although I take your point about satisfying editors/producers there - and I thing thenolongerEmpire did link to his report online yesterday)....but what about CanWest?

You know, picking up the Surete guy with the camera was one of the first things I noticed while watching the thing the first time, but I kinda forgot about it when all the yellow triangle stuff started....ain't it funny how you can misdirect yourself (and it wasn't because I wanted to find the 'gotcha' in the boots, quite the opposite actually).....

Ian--
I've just re-watched Mr. Akin's original report.
I see your point..... especially the way he keeps bringing the anchor-model back on point and even pushes a little further on the bandanas, the beef and the boots.
Clearly he was trying his best to push the line as much as he could.

Speaking of lines, something I haven't heard made mention of yet is a rather curious spectacle at the end of Mike's vid - after they get their three guys back, the cops just abandon their line and wander away.
Sound much cleared up on that vid since Tuesday, btw:

A--
I've been floating thoughts like that around in my head as well.
And at the moment they are really at the sloppy drums stage, so I think I'll refrain for the moment except to note that.....
As somebody told me early on (will have to go back and dig to see who it was, maybe KK or JR?), and as David Akin made very clear in his CTV report yesterday, this thing took place in the Green Zone. Thus, there was no legitimate strategic target to be protected there - right?

rossK,
This affair is not so big in Quebec right now.The population is mostly still in summer holiday mode.Students are not in school yet and people are enjoying the last days of summer.
However in the fall, when Parlement resumes, and serious journalists begin to ask questions, the S.Q. will have to answer to this.
Quebec is basically unplugged during the summer months. The death of three soldiers( from the VanDoos )in Afghanistan brought the grim reality of war home and the end of a leisurely summer.
Expect plenty of fireworks in the fall.

Haven't done the digging yet, but some folks have made passing references to similar things happening in Quebec City in 2001 - what's your POV.
(great to hear from you by the way!)

This no way like 2001. There were over 60,000 protesters then. The entire upper town was fenced in and la rue St.Jean was entirely boarded up.Quebec City was under Seige.
There was the Army,S.Q and R.C.M.P.
There was constant loud drum banging that kept the city up three days.Extra tear gas canisters were brought in from Minnesota. A white cloud of gas hung in the sky, snow cannons were brought in from Mont St.anne de keep the gas from entering the air ducks of major hotels.Citizens were being hospitalised for breathing problems.
There were clashes everywhere. I could go on and on.
Long after the summit as the gas settled the city was coated with a fine white powder and caused lots of health problems.
If you google it you will see plenty of you tube videos.

Deeply alarmed at that police officers dressed as demonstrators were trying to incite violence among peaceful protesters in Montebello, Quebec?
