I'm pretty sure that most of the sun-dried tomatoes are just that - dried on long bolts of cloth in the sun in Southern California and Northern Mexico. I've seen recent photos.
Can't help you with the figs. First place I'd look would be a Greek or Middle Eastern (Lebanese) grocers in Chicago, then I'd try NYC. There aren't too many figs grown in the USA.
My mind works like that, too, and I'm sure that conversationally people think I'm a tad bit loony, or at least that I have adult ADD...

Dates grow on palms and we often see fresh ones here in New Zealand sent from the USA
I in my ignorance thought dried currants came from currant bushes but google tells me there is a special type of grape vine involved

We had a big fig tree growing in our yard. My mama use to go outside and pick fresh figs off the tree and those figs would be sitting in the sun all day. After eating a few of them, mama would have to run before she shit her pants. They, hot figs, will make you shit like a goose. Go to a farmers market or an very high class supper market, they will have fresh figs
So, that's what a currant is.
