Funny...
I have never seen Grapes of Wrath, I'll have to check it out.
I find those in the "helping" professions, such as nurses, tend to be more likely to view the world through rose colored glasses. It's OK. In fact, it is one of the traits I find endearing about nurses and doctors.
That said, I can see why you think there may be something redeemable about Socialism. Sadly, it just isn't so. As an economic theory, it may be attractive. As a reality, not so much. Filtered by the baser instincts of humanity, e.g. greed, it has nothing of value to offer. Even during the tough times.
My .02 cents worth ... spend it as you please.
