Les Simpson sure isn’t going to teach the people at “Panorama” English, is he? Or geography?
This is what he wrote in his blog, “It's about 1:30 Central Time on Friday and I'm in the Houston airport waiting on a flight that will take myself and co-worker Steve Adams to the town of Sumy in the Ukraine.”
Is it 1:30 p.m. or a.m.? We know it’s p.m. because it’s light outside. But “Central Time,” capitalized? Try 1:30 p.m. CDT.
Oh, “the” Houston airport. There are two.
I’ll even forgive “waiting on,” but the worst is, “will take myself … .”
Les, I know you read this blog and you know who I am. Can your English be anymore ignorant? My God, you're the publisher of a corporate-owned daily newspaper in the city of almost 200,000 people. What have you turned your newsroom into? Given that the Globe-News does nothing these days but rewrite news releases from the city of Amarillo and regurgitate court filings, what are you going to teach these people in the Ukraine?
What the hell does this mean? “We're working with a newspaper called Panorama, an independent weekly newspaper. From what I'm told there is a certain amount of press freedom in the country, especially since the ‘Orange’ revolution of several years ago.
“But it is not as free as the U.S. And much of the media still has a government influence.”
“The media still has the government influence?” Does that mean the media is a watchdog? Given how you pander to the city of Amarillo, what are you going to show them about a free press?
And did you even read the story posted on your Web site today at the flight delays yesterday?
Pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.
