Gravatar Biased??? Hmmm...

I'm certainly no fan of the Globe News...because they specialize in feel-good news...and ignore and cover up problems in Amarillo and Canyon and the Panhandle.

But...you think Democrats from this area...running for governor...would get no coverage?

Are any Democrats from this area running for governor???

No?

LMAO!

Are you just pissed because 3 Republicans are running from this area...

And the local Democrats have NO one running for governor?
.

Gravatar Also...I'm no fan of Kay Bag Hutchison...the old Republican War Horse.

The woman is about like the Amarillo mayor...where she has to have someone think for her.

And like McCartt...she probably has to have someone look at a computer screen for her...

And can't do her own research on subjects she needs to know more about.

Kay Bag was the one thought plutonium reprocessing would be a good thing for Pantex.

And if Kay Bag had done some research on her own...she would have known that the EPA raided the DOE at Rocky Flats, Colorado...and shut down the DOE's last attempt at plutonium reprocessing...because of massive contamination from the plutonium...where even the local ponds had traces of plutonium.

A simple 5 second Google search revealed that...but Kay Bag's handlers never told her that...so she is completely clueless.

I'm a Republican...but there is no way in hell...I'd vote for Kay Bag.

But I most likely won't vote for a Democrat either.

Gravatar You know, w-t, you're the worst kind of asshole. By that I mean the ignorant and oblivious kind. I mean, if you ever offered even a coherent thought of some kind, something other than yet another insipid nyaah, nyaah, nyaah, it would be one thing. But you just make up nonsense off the top of your head and vomit it out and somehow think you've made a point of some kind.

None of those three Republican candidates are from anywhere near the Panhandle, unless you want to count Abilene. And in fact, the last Democratic candidate for governor lived in Amarillo for a while.

So why don't you do us all a favor and go be an ignorant, oblivious asshole someplace else.

Gravatar I should follow up and say I don't have any affiliation with PTS. I'm just a reader and occasional commenter.

Gravatar Why respond to w-t? He has no argument worth commenting on and if one presents a counterpoint to his lame points he ignores them. Why bother responding to him?

Intersesting that the globe republican only views the Repugnicans as a valid party. Particularly interesting is a poll reviewed on Daily Kos yesterday citing Cornyn vs Noriega in the Texas Senate race.Rasmussen has it Cornyn 47 and Noriega 43. Problem is Sen Corn has 8 mil to spend and Noriega has $300,000.

Gravatar Democrats have tried to run in this area, but sadly the local demographic is so slanted toward Republicans any Democrat interested in putting his ideas into action is better off switching parties to run as a Republican.

It's strange how many Republicans grumble about the Amarillo Economic Development group and other local and state political decisions that subsidise businesses so richly.

And on a Federal level, it irks me that the Uber-wealthy are getting tax breaks that equal more than my annual salary. Funny how those same tax breaks haven't done much to keep our economy sound.

Wow ...could it be bad policy? It certainly isn't free enterprise. I say cut all the business subsidies and let the strong survive. Welfare for the rich is destroying our nation and the Republicans are the Welfare for the rich party on the local, state, and federal level.

Gravatar To be quite honest, why wouldn't the globe news only consider the republicans? As Lequino states, it seems the only way to be elected in our area (and in most cases the state as a whole) is to be republican. The only significant victory the democrats have scored in this region was Heflin winning Laney's old seat. And to be honest, that was only because Laney got out and beat the bushes for Heflin.

It wasn't a little victory though. The republicans would have given their left nut for it and were after that seat probably more than any other in the state - see republican redistricting (what a bunch of crap) and the funding that Landtroop received as an example. A side note on Laney - he is probably one of Bush's top 5 friends from Texas government.

As an outsider looking in, the Dems just don't put up good candidates - that is candidates that can be elected. It just appears that it is half-hearted efforts at best - especially in our area. Noriega looks to be the best that has been offered in quite some time for a state-wide office. It will be interesting how that turns out. But it is a little disconcerting that he has no interest in visiting our area at all.

Gravatar Noriega has visited Amarillo at least twice -- December 2007 and more recently, although I can't remember the exact dates. And he has visited other places in the Panhandle. I suspect he will be back, especially if the numbers are that close.

Gravatar Maybe it is the lack of publicity, but I did not know that. Thanks.

Gravatar The notion that Democrats have not run good candidates does not pass the laugh test. We have had and currently do have some terrific candidates. The problem is the self-fulfilling prophesy which you all have promoted. In the absence of money to run a campaign that gets noticed, it appears as though the candidates are flawed. And in the absence of electoral success, raising money is problematic. So, yes, it's a vicious cycle.

But there is zero percentage in assuming that it will always stay that way. It takes time, effort and the right set of circumstances, but this area changed from solidly Democratic to solidly Republican 40 years ago, and it can change again. It may seem trite, but you can be the change you wish to see. In plainer terms, you can be part of the solution or part of the problem. This blog can be part of the change. Or it can be a whiny excuse to do nothing.

Make up your minds right now which it's going to be.

Gravatar demophoenix, I'm sure you didn't mean to come off as quite so much of a scold

I agree that things can change, and change can be worked toward. However, the vicious cycle is vicious for a number of reasons.

It is, for one thing, difficult to change things on an individual level. That is, of course, one reason we should all stick together, and it is true that most of us could do more than we do.

But it's even difficult for powerful people to completely swing an area on an individual basis; this is why we have a certain number of RINOs in this area who have run with varying degrees of electoral success. You know they exist.

Another part of the vicious cycle is that, when we are as marginalized as we have been in this area, activism is occasionally counterproductive. A small rally, for example, sometimes looks lamer than no rally at all. It is easy to say, well, then, people should just show up! but ultimately each of us is only one person.

There are other ways to contribute, however, and we are making progress. Ten years ago, even five, many of us spoke quietly when we discussed progressive ideas in public. This no longer feels as necessary. You can now sit in a restaurant or bar (or even at work) praising Obama or Clinton to high heaven and it doesn't feel like you are going to get kicked out or have someone waiting for you when you get outside.

This may seem like an exaggeration, but it's not. It may seem subjective and anecdotal, and it is. But I do believe that things have opened up, and I think PTS and the meetups have been a part of that. Hopefully we'll continue to play even more of a role.

Just "talking politics" may look like whining, but I contend it is the most effective form of activism.

Having said that, some people are worth talking to and some are not. Getting bogged down in arguments that are not cost-effective is one of the inherent dangers in the blogs. We have other weaknesses, but it is still a new form. I do hope we continue to improve.

Gravatar I meant to add that moderately bewildered is worth talking to. He is not a troll and is teachable

Gravatar Moderate still doesn't think Mexico should take care of its own people...so they don't leave and try to sneak into our country.

And he thinks it's somehow "racist" to think that Mexico should clean up its 3rd world act...and start taking care of its own people.

Gravatar WT-please do not assume you know anything about what I think. I assure you that the old saying of ass - u - and me will only apply to u.

Demo - my point on electability is that the person running has to have an appeal not only on an idealogical platform, but must also have other attributes. Why do you think Clinton is a politician and not Carville? Electability is as important, and often more important, (like it or not) as ideaology.
