I'd like to say that I see all the other vendors following suit. However, a few will fall into line the rest will continue with their aggressive..."Get me mines" attitude that we've come to expect from this market.
With luck though, WhenU will prove they have a viable business model. And that model will allow for the current stream of lawsuits to assist in enforcing changes onto other vendors (IE. We can't do business without affiliates! Well...actually...you can...).
This is one of my hopes. And yes...it is a bit wishy washy, however, WhenU still has a long way to go to overcome their former image. Every bit of goodwill and good showing of faith can bring them a step closer to acceptance vs the guarded optimism.
Absolutely. There aren't many companies out there I haven't wailed on in the past. That in itself is enough to make me think they're doing something right. I mean - I just never *see* them anywhere. or hear anything of them. They're just - well - invisible. Which is about the best state you can hope for on an anti-everything website

Back on topic. You are correct PG, they went from one of the more visible companies to neatly disappearing. Hopefully they'll continue with the stream of "Good" antics.

Well, so it seems one single company is doing something, tho, just exactly how well they are doing it, remains to be seen.
Will WhenU be the Pied Piper of adware companies? Only time will tell, but I for one, am not holding my breath. All too many times, adware companies say one thing, then do another. Yes, it appears by most all accounts they are cleaning up, but for how long? Once the money goes away, and you know, that by doing things the ethical way, it will, what will they do then? The amounts of dollars these companies have made, doing things via the Dark Side seems too much to turn down.
It should be interesting tho.
Easy answer to all of these questions: Make all adware that you have to download and install on your computer illegal.
Aurora-make it illegal
CoolWebSearch-make it illegal
and so on and so on and so on.
That would solve the problems FOREVER, because if anyone tried any of the Direct Revenue-type tactics, they would have their asses sitting in jail faster than you can say "What?".

TeMerc...I agree with you. But, at present, by all accounts WhenU is "clean". My hope is that the new business model proves to be profitable AND secure for users. But...we all have to wait and see.
